The development of speed reading

In order to achieve good results, you need to practice regularly, and in order to learn how to read quickly, you also need to try, because the development of speed reading is a skill that is achieved only by working on yourself.

For most people, an increase in reading speed to 500-700 words will be sufficient, and this speed is achieved quite easily. For those who want to learn to read, understand and memorize more than 700 words per minute, they will most likely have to work hard and go through special programs and techniques.

Sign up for our Speed Reading course in 30 days. If you are now reading 200 words per minute, then after a month of training you will read 500-900 words per minute. Two months later, 900-1800 words per minute. Three months later, 1800-4500 words per minute. And in 4-6 months of training, you can achieve a reading speed of 10,000 words per minute.

Since 2015, 1507 people from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Orenburg, have studied under our program, Nizhny Novgorod, Kyiv, Minsk and other cities.

If you learn speed reading on your own, then it will be difficult to achieve such results and it will take much more time. Without a special program, it is unlikely that you will be able to read more than 500 words per minute.

For comparison, it is difficult for an athlete without special training and a coach not to achieve the results that athletes achieve through special programs and under the supervision of a coach.

How to read?

Remember your childhood, first you were taught to disassemble letters, then read syllables from them, then read simple words by syllables. Later, you quickly read small words, but large and especially unfamiliar words were sometimes read not even the first time. Step by step, year after year, as a child, you learned to read faster and faster, and your brain memorized and recognized more and more words. No one has ever taught you to read in any other way. At best, you were taught to navigate the text, read fluently, understand its structure and somehow memorize it, so that later you can study it in more detail without mixing everything in your head.

So, first there were letters, then syllables, then words and the most commonly used phrases. People who learn to read even faster read in phrases, lines, and even several lines at a time, and then all at once in paragraphs and even pages.

Same way speed reading You can also teach children, in some cases they can learn even faster than adults and they like it. The main thing is to develop the habit of following certain rules, such as not going back and concentrating on the content of the text, automatically following the rules of the chosen methodology and not thinking.

It should be noted that skill fast reading requires long and painstaking work, so first you need to solve a few questions:

  • How fast do I want to learn to read
  • How fast should I read
  • How much time am I willing to spend daily/weekly exercising

There are several ways to quickly read:

Selective reading

Selective reading is the skill of quickly structuring text and understanding its structure, selecting and reading the desired block of text of any length. This approach is used when it makes no sense to read the entire text, but only need to draw specific data from it, for example, the definition of a word in a dictionary or some technical, financial, and similar information.

It should be noted that this method is not suitable for reading fiction because works of fiction require complete immersion of the reader. There may be exceptions if you learn something specific from a work of art, for example, why and how Raskolnikov killed the old pawnbroker in Dostoevsky’s book Crime and Punishment, but this is no longer structured text recognition, but fluent reading, similar to rewinding a video cassette.

Fast reading of the entire text

Quick reading- this is when the entire text is read at high speed, with full understanding and memorization of the necessary information.

In this way, you can read any texts, starting from technical and scientific texts and end with works of art. True, it is worth noting that literary texts are more difficult to read, because they are read for the soul. This means that you need to have time to immerse yourself in the text and enjoy it, unless of course there is such a need for this.

It is also not always convenient to read beautiful romantic works at the limit of one's abilities, when you just want to relax in the evening after a working day. But if you are impatient to find out what is ahead and emotions capture and carry away along with the book, then the person himself, without noticing it, begins to accelerate and read comfortably, as quickly as he can.

I warn you that when reading quickly with a good immersion in the text, you can get so carried away that the world around you will cease to exist and fade among vivid images and pictures. the book you read, which will also improve over time, and reading a book will be like a beautiful film that is shot personally for you by your brain.

So beautiful minutes of pages and hours of books fly by unnoticed...

I had the experience of reading both those and other texts, and literary ones were always read more slowly, and if you do not maintain the skill speed reading and read only fiction, then this skill may eventually fall to colloquial speech.

Reading at speeds above 800 words per minute

  1. Stop pronouncing a readable text to yourself, because the speed of speaking even "to yourself" can be no more than 800, maximum (in my experience) 900 words per minute.

At first, it will be very difficult to wean the brain used to read for centuries without speaking, only with a glance, but then it will be easier. The main thing is not to start speaking again until the skill gets stronger.

  2. Do not go back, read only forward, even if it became incomprehensible.

Returning, you will only slow down the whole process and then you will not be able to read quickly, because you will return every time. And the brain is lazy, every time it will ask you to go back until you wean it.

At first, when reading quickly, many details in the text will be incomprehensible and you will want to go back and reread the text again and again, but then the brain adapts and will make fewer and fewer such errors until their number tends to zero.

It is like an athlete who lifts more weight or speed than he is comfortable with in order for the muscles to grow and develop under load. It is the same here, we take the brain out of the comfort zone and force it to train.

  3. View Width. When reading more than 300 words per minute, you have to move your eyes very quickly through the text. This is useful when reading for a short time, but when reading for a long time, the eyes get very tired and may not even have time to move.

Therefore, it is necessary to increase the width of the view, to develop peripheral vision.

    conclusions

On the Internet you can find a lot of professional and not very books on speed reading. You must choose the appropriate textbook yourself, but it is better to focus on already proven treatises recognized throughout the world.

Speed reading is a speed reading technique, an acquired ability that increases the speed by 3-20 times the average (which is 180-200 words per minute). With its help, you can speed up the perception text information and master the process of memorizing what has been read.

There are many programs with which it is permissible to increase the level of reading, speed up the memorization process and achieve an expansion of memory cells. All the training lessons of such programs are aimed at developing a person spiritually and, of course, intellectually.
Oleg Andreev is a well-known author, offers training in his own programs, which he himself composes.

    • Learning to increase reading speed. Some were able to increase it 20 times, but the average achievement is an increase of 5 times.
    • Training provides better and faster perception of textual information.
    • The development of memory and, of course, attention.
    • The opportunity to develop your own intuition, which will not be superfluous in everyday life.
    • The opportunity to develop or improve creative abilities.
    • A complete physical recovery of the body.
    • Education affects the spiritual growth of a person.

In order to know, feel, realize all these points, you need to go through and study the 7 basic laws on which the speed reading technique is based. It is these laws that form the basis of all methods. The program "How to increase the speed of reading?" requires time, attention and, of course, the desire of a person, without which the implementation and achievement of a positive result is impossible.

Oleg Andreev, in turn, identifies 7 programs, each of which is aimed at working on oneself and developing one's intellectual abilities and spirituality.

    Speed Reading Rules

    • No regression.

Regressions are eye movements that the reader involuntarily makes. The available wording is re-reading text. This happens for several reasons:

    • the first is a complex text that requires sharpening of attention and, accordingly, re-reading;
    • The second reason is a rethinking of what has been read.

Regressions are a kind of habit that slows down speed reading. To get rid of regressions, you just need to train. The essence of the training is that the text must be read with the highest possible level of attention and concentration.

For the best result, you need to get rid of all extraneous thoughts and distractions. In addition, one reading is effective for memory. The memorization process works instantly, and repeated reading or aggravation on one word can confuse the main meaning.

    • No articulation.

Articulation is the facial expressions of the reader, which is accompanied by familiarization with textual information at a subconscious level. Articulation accompanies reading both aloud and silently. Many people think that reading to yourself speeds up the process, but this is an erroneous opinion.

This phenomenon has its own classification:

    • text accompaniment mechanical movements;
    • speaking directly in the speech center is a much deeper and less controlled level.

The principle of operation is based on reading to the accompaniment of a certain sound (music is excluded). You need to use sound recordings with faster and slightly slower rhythms, which should be turned on when reading and tapping to the rhythm in parallel. Andreev devotes a whole program to mastering this process; in this teaching, his opinion is fundamentally different from the lessons of foreign teachers.

    • Integral reading algorithm.

The essence of this rule is based on optimization and highlighting the main meaning that the text carries in itself. The semantic perception of the text can only be taught by a special program; it is impossible to learn and master this rule on self-study.

    • vertical eye movement.

Easy to say, but much more difficult to apply. This rule allows the reader to save unnecessary eye movements, which are spent on moving from one line to another. So reads a common person due to the small field of view. Vertical eye movement is based on eye movement from top to bottom, but strictly through the center of the page. This method allows you to read the phrase as a whole, and not by individual words.

    • Isolation of the dominant.

This technique allows you to highlight the most basic semantic meaning of the text and cut off secondary information. This method has 2 principles:

    • definition and allocation of central semantic points;
    • intuitive understanding of the text.

In his book, Andreev explains this process in an accessible way.

    • The development of memory and attention.

Attention, concentration and memory are the guides with the help of which it is possible to achieve high results in speed reading in practice.

The technique of fast speed reading allows you to capture attention, it is such vicious circle: without attention it is impossible to read quickly, but by reading quickly, you reach the highest level of attention and memory development.

An indispensable assistant in improving memory and attention is exercises with words, mental reading them in reverse. Regular exercise brings results. It is worth starting with simple and short words and every day complicating your task.

    • Mandatory daily minimum.

The development of fast reading requires special psychological costs and efforts from a person. Having embarked on the path of learning this program, you need to read several magazines, articles, newspapers and at least 50-100 pages of a book a day.

Oleg Andreev in his teachings prefers points: 1,2,3,4,6 and calls them not rules, but interference, which in one way or another slow down the reading technique, reduce the level of memorization. But with all this, Mr. Andreev proposes to study the volume of the readable text, which over time will provide a solid time budget.

The program, which the author Andreev sets out, offers a kind of speed reading simulator, which will be entered in the table. The table called "Analysis of reading volume", which clearly demonstrates speed reading in practice, allows you to increase the trend of its development, improve the processes of memorization and expansion of memory cells.

    Table "Analysis of reading volume"

The table should clearly display the amount of text that is read during the day. At the same time, it is broken down separately by days and styles of the material read (textbooks, manuals, dictionaries, newspapers, magazines, etc.). The criteria are the volume of the text and the time spent on this text.

Measured units: the text must be counted in pieces, as for the style of the material, and directly the characters in each of the styles, the daily reading time must be recorded in minutes, and the weekly result must be set in hours. The table is a kind of personal incentive, where a person, seeing the result of the previous day, tries to overcome it. Andreev claims that a week is enough to see the result and set the pace of his development.

Teaching this technique allows you to develop five of the five types of reading. It is worth knowing that a person who has not studied speed reading has only two.

    Reading types:

    • Concentrated reading, it is used in the study of a narrow profile text (legal, medical, technical, etc.). This is a great memory training.
    • Reading slowly, it is typical for fiction.
    • Anticipatory reading or preliminary - with its help determine the essence of what is being read.
    • Skimming is used to get an idea of the content.
    • Fast reading itself is speed reading.

    Speed Reading Exercises

    • Read the text in the standard way, from top to bottom and in reverse order. This is the first training for memory and attention.
    • The second lesson trains attention. Learning is about finding one word that the other person points to. The text for this exercise is suitable for absolutely anyone, be it tutorial or a novel.
    • The speed reading technique and the fluent reading program allows you to develop logical thinking. Artistic texts are suitable for this exercise. Learning consists of reading through a line or sentence. Such lessons are unacceptable for reading business documentation; it requires a careful and concentrated reading of every word. This method displays the results in an indicative table, which Andreev offers in training. Training is aimed at speeding up reading, and at developing memory and improving the memorization of the information read.
    • Faster browsing (20 seconds per page). During this time, you need to determine the main words that carry the main meaning and scroll through the pages to compose a text that would not lose its general meaning. Such lessons are within the power of those who have already completed the training by about half, and have basic memorization skills.
    • Read books at the same rhythm without slowing down and without stopping, do not re-read the same sentence several times.
    • Having mastered the previous point, complicate the task, the following lessons need to close the read text with a sheet, observing speed.
    • Acceleration occurs if you move the finger of your left hand across the page at a distance of 2–3 cm from the text being read.

These exercises will allow you to achieve results in speed reading and raise the level of memorization of information.

Among the first books that addressed the issues of speed reading was the book Victor Pekelis "Your opportunities are a man."

    Publisher: Knowledge. 1973
Viktor Davydovich Pekelis (1921 - 1997) - Soviet and Russian writer, publicist, popularizer of science. Member of the Union of Writers of the USSR (1974).
The book contained a chapter: Read by meters.
“The ability to read quickly is a property of a highly organized mind, concentrated attention, trained vision. This skill was possessed by such geniuses of mankind as Mark and Lenin, Pushkin and Chernyshevsky.
The author cites the shortcomings of ordinary reading - "phonetization" or the habit of pronouncing readable words to oneself. And draws attention to the important ability to follow the main thoughts and ideas contained in the text, skipping unnecessary details.
How to speed up the process of reading - the method of learning, ultimately, the author writes - is based on the development of memory and attention. You need to learn how to move your eyes through the text from top to bottom, and not from left to right.
Grab groups of words in one glance and try to stop and re-read a word or phrase less often.
The first goal is to force yourself to read as much information as possible in a unit of time. For this, training is offered using a home-made simulator in the form of cards with pasted words: one word, two, three and four words. By changing the speed and cards, try to remember what you see. Such classes for 3-4 months for 15 minutes 2-3 times a week.
But you can train everywhere, including on the street, remembering at a glance the numbers of passing cars, the inscriptions on posters, the texts of advertisements.

The author only points out some technical aspects of speed reading training, without much detail.
But perhaps the most important thing that I would note, the author writes - "In general, there is reading - penetration into the beautiful, and there is speed reading - mastering the growing flow of information."

How to work effectively with information.

    Publishing house "Book", 1975, 121 p.

Getsov Georgy Gerasimovich - journalist, author of eight books on the rationalization of mental work.
The book does not contain techniques that train vision and eliminate vocalization, but the book contains techniques rational organization reading. In particular, it is said about the first stage of reading - a cursory review.
How to draw up card indexes, make extracts and notes, make notes, plans and abstracts, make notes in books. This and much more is covered in the book.
The last reissue of the book in 2005 added a little information about working with a computer and the Internet, but still the main value of the book is the organization of the reading process.

    F. Leather. rational reading. Faster and more thorough. Pedagogy. 1980, 160 p. (written in 1976). Circulation 40,000.

    F. Leser - scientist of the GDR, Ph.D., professor at the University. W. Humboldt. (Another book by the author, published in the USSR - Memory Training, Mir, 1979).
The author sees the problem of rational reading not only in the development of speed reading skills, but in its relationship with the assimilation, understanding and memorization of the material being read.
The speed of reading should depend on the goals and objectives of reading and the required level of mastery of the material.
The author, without denying the usefulness of hardware methods for developing visual skills, nevertheless believes that they do not have such a strong effect on reading speed. The main thing is the reader's ability to understand the text. An indicator of this ability is the reader's ability to convey the content and meaning of what they read, for example, in the form of retelling or answering questions.
As in the book by G. Getsov, it is said that one should choose the speed of reading depending on the goals of reading. For example, if we only need to get general information about the content, then the degree of understanding can be 50%, respectively, and the speed can be higher than in the case when you need to understand the most significant in the text.

A rational reader varies reading speed from 100 to 1000 words per minute, depending on the goals and complexity of the text.
The author, along with a consideration of methods for developing speed reading skills (eliminating bad habits) touches on the issues of controlling the speed of reading. Rational reading is more than speed reading.

    Vest publishing house, Odessa, 1994

The best thing here is to learn dynamic reading (not to be confused with the speed reading method!).
Anticipated perception of the text, i.e. reading anticipation. A guess is a property of our thinking, first letters, then words, phrases, semantic units, phrases.
Exercises are given to develop our senses - sight, hearing, tactile, smell, taste, time. All this forms the development of creative imagination for deeper penetration into the subtext.
In the second part of the book - teaching dynamic reading. Variation of reading speed depending on the goals and complexity of the text - reading becomes dynamic.
An interesting description of the method is “emotional textogram”.

It is hardly possible to list all the books on speed reading in a short article, but nevertheless I will point out a few more of the most important from my point of view.
