What are the best paints for stained glass? Do-it-yourself painting on glass with acrylic paints

Painting glass surfaces allows you to create unique products that can decorate the interior of a living space and office. A wide selection of materials and stencils in specialized stores makes it possible for both professional and novice artists to do this. Before starting work, it is worthwhile to figure out what paints on glass exist and how to apply them correctly.

Types of paint materials for glass

There are several main types of coating, depending on the purpose of application and the basis for production.

For stained glass

Stained glass paints are a decorative material that is resistant to abrasion, not afraid of water and sunlight. Stained glass paints allow you to decorate mirror surfaces, glass vases, dishes, photo frames, etc.

Before using a set of stained glass paints with stained glass windows, it is necessary to apply a contour that will prevent the staining composition from spreading. After drying, stained glass paints become transparent. The set of paints is most often included for applying contour lines.

A distinction is made between organic solvent materials and water-based paints, which differ in their field of application.

Acrylic

These water-based materials are opaque, similar to oil painting. For application, it is better to use a wide brush, and if the surface has a large area, then it is worth taking an acrylic composition in the form of an aerosol.

Oil based

Oil paints are opaque, therefore they are intended for painting matte surfaces. Before application, they must be diluted with an oil topcoat, which makes the material resistant to water with the addition of detergents. However, the coating is not heat resistant.

Based on silicates

Silicate heat-resistant coatings for glass resemble watercolor, but they must be cured at a temperature of 700 to 800°C. This can be done at home in the oven, if the size of the product allows.

Application of a fixer

When purchasing a set of stained glass paints, you should know that fixing is necessary after they are applied and dried.

Varnish is a universal fixer for any paints. But, in addition to this function, it is used as a solvent if the material has thickened, or when mixing paints. Also, porous surfaces are varnished before painting, which makes it possible to make them smooth, simplifying the drawing process.

Application

Stained glass paints have their own application technology. To get started, you need to purchase:

  • a set of stained glass paints;
  • contours for drawing on a glass surface;
  • ready-made stencils, which, if desired, can be made independently;
  • ethanol;
  • brushes;
  • cotton buds;
  • toothpicks or a needle.

Before drawing stained glass paints, select a pattern. You can take freely available templates and stencils for copying. Further, all work is carried out in stages and in a certain sequence.

Before painting glass, it is degreased with alcohol. If there is talent and skills of the artist, then a pattern is applied with a marker. Otherwise, you can attach it to reverse side products or transfer to the front side from the stencil through carbon paper.

The contour must be carefully circled around each detail, avoiding gaps. Then you should wait for it to dry completely, the time of which is indicated in the instructions.

Stained glass paints are applied by dropping, and then distributed with a brush from the center to the periphery in a uniform thick layer. Errors must be immediately corrected with cotton swabs, preventing the coating from drying out.

Having painted all the details of one color, you need to thoroughly rinse the brush, wipe it dry and start working with a different shade. Stained glass paints form air bubbles in their thickness, which can be removed with the tip of a needle or toothpick. To speed up the drying process of the finished pattern, you can use a hair dryer.

Application of acrylic coating

glass painting acrylic paints also begins with degreasing the work surface and applying a pattern on its own or using a stencil.

While do-it-yourself stained glass paints are applied only to a contoured drawing, this is not necessary for their acrylic counterparts.

If you make a contour, the image will resemble a stained glass window. And without its use, the pattern will be stylized as a work of painting.

After drying, the items of kitchen services should be coated with a heat-resistant varnish to increase their service life and preserve the colorfulness of the drawings.

It is worth considering the fact that decorative, heat-resistant water-based acrylic paints dry very quickly, but require baking in the oven for durability.

Use of balloon coatings

Aerosol paints are most commonly used on large pieces of glass, although professional artists also use them to decorate small pieces. This can be done without rich drawing experience by using stencils or construction tape.

In specialized stores, you can purchase the following types of aerosol formulations:

  • oil;
  • heat-resistant;
  • acrylic;
  • latex and others.

Most often, spray paints for stained-glass windows and other glass products have an acrylic base.

Also, production has been established for the processing of certain types of dishes.

The advantages of aerosol materials include:

  • quick readiness for use;
  • the ability to penetrate into hard-to-reach places;
  • good adhesive properties;
  • long shelf life without changing the quality characteristics;
  • no tools required for application;
  • resistance to abrasion and fading;
  • rich color palette;
  • high drying rate.

Despite the abundance of advantages, spray paints have some disadvantages:

  • impossibility;
  • complex application technique;
  • mandatory use of stencils for drawing small details - this increases the consumption of expensive paint;
  • aerosol materials of different colors cannot be mixed;
  • use during spraying of such agents personal protection like goggles, mask or respirator.

When using aerosol acrylic paints, you should strictly follow the instructions to avoid the formation of streaks and other flaws.

When decorating glass surfaces in the open air, calm, cool weather should be chosen.

You can fix the applied pattern with a transparent acrylic varnish.

Making coatings at home

Despite the fact that the production of such materials for glass is at a high level, and a set of stained glass paints can be easily bought at the store, some artists prefer to make them themselves.

They are prepared on the basis of organic matter, like gelatin, which must be diluted with BF-2 glue or transparent varnish for furniture. To give the desired shade, dyes for fabric are added to the mixture. They can be replaced with ordinary gouache.

If this is your first time creating stained-glass windows with your own hands, then, having applied freshly prepared paint, it must be fixed with a colorless varnish to avoid washing off the pattern with water.

Plexiglas painting

Before you paint plexiglass, you need to familiarize yourself with the features of this process and purchase necessary materials and tools.

First, the surface is cleaned of grease, dust and dirt using alcohol. Then the product is placed in a heated dye solution of zaponlak for a time that ranges from 30 seconds to 15 minutes. This indicator determines the saturation of the tone.

After the end of the staining process, the glass is quickly transferred to a container with cold water until completely cooled. Next, you need to wipe the plexiglass with a dry cloth or felt to give it a shine. If the color of the product is not bright enough, then it can be made more saturated by repeating the entire cycle from the beginning, after thoroughly drying the treated surface.

When deciding how to paint plexiglass, it is worth deciding in advance on the color scheme and the availability of sketches that are applied after basic staining using stencils and a paint brush.

Deciding to decorate your home with hand-painted glassware, you should try various techniques and coverage, and then make a choice. In specialized stores, you can first take the materials of the basic colors for dyeing, and then independently obtain various shades from them. And you can immediately purchase a set of stained glass paints and stencils, so that there is nothing to limit the flight of your imagination.

I am often asked questions about how to use stained glass paints, where to start, how to prepare the surface of the glass for painting, how to correctly apply the outline from a tube, and so on ...

In this article I would like to give some advice, how to work with stained glass paints for beginners so that even the first experience is successful and brings pleasure and joy.

1. How to prepare the surface?

Before applying stained glass paints to glass, mirror or ceramics, the surface must be washed and degreased, so that the paint lays down better, the adhesion to the glass is better, and ... the stained glass paint does not peel off in the future.

Any detergent is suitable for washing. You can degrease with alcohol or glass cleaner. The second option is used much more often, especially if the surface is large and flat.

Glass can be degreased with a glass cleaner

Everyone knows that our skin secretes sebum, and on the palms of the hands and feet, it is produced especially intensively. ... By the way, that's why fingerprints are clearly visible on glass and metal. It is necessary to degrease glass from sebum!

During operation, it is advisable not to touch the glass surface with your hands, so as not to leave fingerprints or palm prints. Under the hand, you can put, for example, a paper napkin. Very comfortably…

2. How to paint with stained glass paints on glass: pipette or brush?

The beauty of stained glass paints lies in the fact that they can be applied not only with a brush, but also with a pipette, which depends on the basis of the material and the height of the paint pour.

With a pipette, for example, it is convenient to fill large spaces, and then distribute the paint over the surface with a brush. At least that's how I work... Got used to it and the work goes faster and more interesting! The surface is even, smooth, just like real colored glass! But mostly, stained glass masters work with a brush.

In the photo, I fill the paint with a special pipette, but you can take a regular pipette from a pharmacy

It all depends on end result The one you want to see when you're done. Decide for yourself what to choose a brush or a pipette ... In any case, you need to try both to understand what is best for you!

If you are a beginner, then it will be useful for you to know what And before you go to the store and make a choice, it would be nice to understand what and how.

3. Is the outline required or not?

Usually, classical painted stained-glass windows or paintings on glass have contours. If your goal is beautiful, even murals, use embossed paint or stained lead tape.

Remember: all contour lines must be closed. If there is a gap somewhere in the outline, the colors will flow, mix, and this can ruin your work.

Most often they use a black outline or tin color that imitates metal.

Unless, of course, this is a non-contour technique, where the contour is not used to contain stained glass paint, but rather has a decorative character. In another article, you can read

And of course, each manufacturer has its own contour paints in tubes of different colors. I especially like the ones that imitate silver or gold.

The golden outline looks great in story paintings on glass

Be sure to let the relief contour dry for about 20 minutes before you start painting with stained glass paints! Consider this! When working with stained glass paints, the sequence of actions one after the other is important.

4. How to paint with stained glass paints?

Filling with paint and filling in the elements in the stained glass painting is perhaps the most interesting part. You need to start filling each sector from the core, gradually painting over the areas next to the contour. At the same time, it is not desirable to “climb” onto the contour itself, otherwise the painting will look sloppy and not so impressive.

You can start learning to paint with buds of large flowers

The background can be painted last. But there are other options for painted glass paintings, where the main background consists of acrylic paint and ... newspaper! Such a decorative design of a glass picture looks harmoniously in an ensemble with stained glass lacquer paints!

Especially for lovers of stained glass painting, I develop and record Master classes in video format. can be suitable even for beginners, as it is “chewed” in detail and will be understandable to everyone. And also ideal for those who want to enjoy a quiet lesson for relaxation and calm.

5. How correct defects and remove stained glass paints from glass?

A beginner artist almost always encounters problems when working with stained glass paints: accidentally “blurting” more material, painting over the contour, creating bubbles.… You need to correct these defects immediately, until the paint has dried.

Bubbles, for example, are convenient to “drive out” to the contour, or “pop” with a needle or toothpick. And excess paint can be removed with a brush or cotton swab.

Leaked paint outside the contour can be removed with a clean brush dipped in solvent

It is convenient to clean an accidentally stained contour with a brush or a stick dipped in solvent or water (depending on the base of stained glass paint). With a solvent, you can completely remove the stained glass paints from the glass until they are dry.

6. How to dilute stained glass paints if they are thickened?

Remember: if your working material has thickened, you can dilute it only with a special thinner, preferably from the same company as the paints! Why?

If you dilute water-based stained glass paints with water, they will fade after drying. The same thing happens with organic paints. White Spirit "kills" lacquer-based paints.

Wrong thinner impairs adhesion to the surface, reduces UV resistance, gloss and initial shade.

Purity and transparency of color - the main indicator of stained glass paints

So that the finished painting does not fade and does not become cloudy, and the paints do not change their composition and properties, use special thinners designed for this purpose! Every paint manufacturer has them!

Many stained glass works were ruined when the artists thickened stained glass paints were incorrectly diluted.

7. How to mix stained glass paints and get new shades?

Unfortunately n That is, all manufacturers of stained glass paints have such a large selection of paints as the French Pebeo Vitrail , for example. Do not despair, because the paints can be mixed and get the desired shade!

To get new colors and shades, use a special container with recesses. Although you can get by with ordinary lids from plastic bottles and other handy containers.

Old cream jars can be an excellent container for mixing paints.

Start mixing with a small amount of paint... it's important to remember that dark colors are easier to create than light colors. In any case, knowledge and skills come with practice. Try mixing and create your own interesting colors and shades!

8. Why can't you touch the surface of lacquer-based paint?

If you have made your choice in favor, here you need to remember one rule as an axiom: solvent-based stained glass paints dry for a long time!

Any touch in the first 30-40 minutes will leave a fingerprint. Complete drying occurs after 8 or more hours(the manufacturer indicates the exact time on the jar). Forcibly drying stained glass paints is not recommended, as this will cause them to lose their luster.

Also, keep your work to dry completely in a place where dust does not get in, otherwise you will get a “dusty decor” on the glass surface😊 Although some people might like it...

Non-contour technique on the example of a red cat: smooth mixing of colors inside the contour

In general, if you have a good imagination and creative curiosity, you can create interesting pictures if you use different techniques: stained glass paints and glass, stained glass paints, glass, paper and potal, stained glass paints and canvas, stained glass paints, canvas and acrylic …. It turns out already, which gives great opportunities in the art world!

  • The art is to find the extraordinary in the ordinary and the ordinary in the extraordinary.

Ask your questions below in the comments, I usually answer all questions quickly

When does glass need to be painted? What dyes can be found on sale? How to use them correctly to create complex multi-color compositions? Can glass paint be made by hand?

Let's figure it out.

Why is it needed

Keywords — stained glass painting. Coloring allows you to create complex color compositions, diversify appearance furniture and limit the transparency of glass where it is undesirable (for example, in the case of skylights in bathrooms or transparent inserts in the bathroom door). At the same time, the glass retains its main function- permeability (albeit partial) for light.

To clarify: a traditional stained-glass window is a composition of glass stained with mineral dyes at the production stage.
They are combined into a composition with a flexible lead tape.
Stained glass painting is the creation of multi-color or one-color drawings on solid glass or ceramics.

General concepts

Paints according to the method of application can be divided into two main categories.

  1. Fired. After application and drying, they undergo heat treatment. At home, an oven can be used for this purpose (of course, with a small stained-glass window area); the firing process takes from an hour to an hour and a half at a temperature of about 150 degrees.
    Fired paints are, on average, noticeably stronger than alternative solutions; in particular, painted glass can be washed using any household chemicals, except for abrasive ones.
  2. Unfired paints are simply dried at room temperature. In some cases, an additional coating can be used for fixing - a resistant transparent varnish.

There are also two ways to apply paint.

  1. The compositions in aerosols are applied through a stencil. Using several stencils, you can create multi-color compositions. This painting method is simple and does not require much time; however, it does not allow stained glass to be made any complicated.
  2. More difficult decision- transfer the relief contour of the image to the glass using a special contour paste. Then the areas closed by the contour are filled with a coloring composition and dried in a horizontal position. The source of contours can be both processed in graphic editors photographs and paintings, and ... children's colorings, in which a multi-color image is formed in a very similar way.

Types of paints

Acrylic

Acrylic paints for glass are an aqueous dispersion of acrylic resin with the addition of pigments and special polymers that improve adhesion to a smooth surface. Thanks to the water base, they are odorless and dry quickly. Thick consistency allows them to be applied to curved surfaces or used in cases where the dismantling of glass (for example, standing in an already installed double-glazed window) is undesirable.

Nuance: acrylic paints cannot be diluted.
Too much a large number of water will cause the colorant to drop on a horizontal surface and run off a sloped or vertical surface.

All fired paints are water-based. It is worth clarifying: we are talking about dyes applicable at home. For industrial coloring, powder mixtures of fusible glass with temperature-resistant mineral pigments are used; firing takes place at a temperature of about 800 degrees.

Pictured is acrylic paint.

Solvent

The base is petroleum solvent. White spirit can be used to dilute the dye.

How do these paints differ in terms of practical application?

  • Drying takes from several hours to two or three days.
  • Willy-nilly, all work has to be carried out under the hood or with open windows. Solvent and white spirit are toxic; in addition, their vapors are explosive in a certain concentration.
  • Apply paint only and exclusively on a horizontal surface.
  • The addition of a solvent allows you to vary the saturation of the color: depending on its percentage in the paint, the stained glass area can be made almost transparent or completely opaque to light.

Useful: in order to avoid confusion, it is worth clarifying that not a single stained glass paint is intended for fiberglass, plexiglass and plastics of any kind.
For these materials, dyes based on polyurethane and epoxy are used.

Depending on the pigments and fillers used, it is possible to obtain a different texture and appearance of the painted surface. Thanks to their combination, stained-glass windows imitating frost are born; relief images; vintage paints for glass imitate an old, cracked coating from time to time.

In this case, the basis of the paint is a petroleum solvent.

painting lessons

Is it difficult to create a multi-color image on glass yourself? Let's learn how to outline stained glass and paint it.

Image

Where to get a sketch - we have already discussed.

However, we have not affected at least important topic: what should be the image that we are going to transfer to the glass?

  • It must not contain open loops. The instruction is related to the method of applying paints: multi-colored areas that are not delimited by contour paste will mix with each other. An exception is those cases when strokes applied with a contrasting contour represent an independent element of the image.
  • Sketch should not contain too much small items and excessively closely spaced lines. The contour applied with paste is noticeably thicker than the pencil line.

Glass

Before painting, the substrate must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased.

  1. Everything is washed with normal detergent for dishes or glass cleaner.
  2. Then the remnants of dirt and fat are removed with alcohol or acetone.

In order to transfer the sketch to the surface to be painted, we will have to assemble a simple structure for copying: the image is placed on a horizontal surface over a dense fabric and covered with glass. For additional fixation, which will help to avoid accidental displacement, you can use pieces of adhesive tape.

Circuit

Further work is carried out strictly in medical gloves. Even a small amount of secretions from the sebaceous glands can affect the adhesion of the paint.

The contour is drawn along the lines of the sketch at a moderate-high speed. Trying to draw lines too slowly will result in lines that are uneven due to inevitable hand tremors. Erroneously applied strokes are cleaned after the contour paste dries slightly, using a razor blade or a cotton swab moistened with alcohol.

Coloring

Thick acrylic paints are applied with a fine art brush. More liquid solvents will fill the space allotted for them themselves: it is enough to drop a few drops into the center of the area limited by the contour.

Do-it-yourself paint preparation

Stained glass paints and contour paste are not sold everywhere, and not everyone will like their price. Fortunately, everything you need for painting can be prepared independently at a much lower cost.

Circuit

The contour paste is prepared literally on the knee from PVA glue, black ink and aluminum powder.

Its source can be a two-component silver paint.

  1. 50 milliliters of PVA mixed with 30 milliliters of black mascara.
  2. Aluminum powder is gradually poured into the resulting mixture until the circuit reaches the consistency of sour cream of medium density.

Is it difficult to make paints? What can serve as a basis for them?

Nitrolac

  1. We take about 100 milliliters of nitrolac NTs-218, NTs-222 or NTs-2141.
  2. Add to it 40 milliliters of solvent No. 647.
  3. We introduce 10-15 grams of oil paint for artwork into the resulting composition and mix thoroughly.
  4. Mix glue and acetone in equal proportions.
  5. Add paste from a ballpoint pen of a suitable color until the desired saturation is obtained.

BF-2

Gelatin

  1. Dilute 6 grams of edible gelatin in a glass of warm water.
  2. In a separate bowl, dilute the dye for cotton fabric.
  3. Gradually add liquid dye to the gelatin base.

Please note: this composition is the most harmless; however, it is not resistant to water.
To protect the stained-glass window you created, you will have to cover it with a layer of colorless nitro-lacquer.

Styrofoam

  1. Pour acetone into a tall glass or laboratory glassware with a narrow neck. The narrow neck will limit the rate of evaporation of the volatile solvent.
  2. Gradually add crushed polystyrene to it, stirring the solution with a thin stick or a piece of wire. The desired consistency will be reached when the solution forms on the surface of the sticks taken out of the dish, a film quickly flowing from it.

  1. We paint the resulting polystyrene varnish with oil paint for artwork.

Conclusion

We hope that the proposed solutions will be useful to the reader. The video in this article will provide an opportunity to get to know the technology of glass staining and the materials used in this process. Success in creative work!

Types of stained glass paints and their features

Using stained glass paints, you can create an elastic application that will decorate absolutely any glass object or mirror. But first, you should decide what kind of paints you need for painting on glass.

1. Paints for working with glass are produced on a water and synthetic basis.

The former can be diluted with water, do not need a varnish coating, as they require “baking”, but at the same time they are prone to the appearance of air bubbles, therefore they should be mixed very carefully. The second, in turn, ideally lie flat on work surface, can be mixed to obtain new shades with other colors (preferably within the same series), need varnishing and, unfortunately, have an unpleasant odor. For this reason, water-based stained glass paints are recommended for children. And professionals can make a choice based on specific needs.

2. Paints for stained-glass windows are not only bright, but also matte and transparent.

For example, matte ones are suitable for creating New Year's snowflakes and frosty patterns on the windows, and transparent ones for elegant drawings on wedding glasses.

3. Stained glass paints are “baked”, that is, they need to be heated up to 160 degrees when using an oven, as well as “non-baked”, that is, varnished to protect against atmospheric and mechanical influences.
