After the Second World War, Europe experienced a construction boom, and the concept of Do It Yourself (DIY, "Do It Yourself") was more popular than ever. At first, people simply rebuilt their houses destroyed during the war, or improved their living conditions due to the post-war population boom.

Later, the design of housing became a way of self-expression, manifestation of individuality. A little later, Americans also joined this trend, primarily young educated people, who thus opposed themselves to the American society of narrow specialists who could do nothing but their profession. So in Western Europe and America in the 1960s and 70s, hypermarkets of the DIY format appeared (the English name for stores for home and repair, the literal translation is “Do it yourself”).

In Russia, the first DIY hypermarket opened in St. Petersburg on October 6, 1997. It was Maksid on Grazhdansky Prospekt.

Within the first month of its existence, the store has become one of the most popular places in the city. Citizens came here not only for shopping, but also just for a tour - to look at the huge cozy and bright shopping room, take a walk among the presented abundance of goods, chat with friendly sellers. A year after the opening, more than a third of St. Petersburg residents were shopping at Maksidom.

Over the following years, Maksidom remains one of the leaders in its field and is developing steadily, opening new stores not only in St. Petersburg, but also in other cities of Russia
