Homemade soap recipes. How to make soap at home recipe for beginners from scratch

Formerly making soap self made at home was ubiquitous. Using ashes and animal fats, the families themselves produced detergents for their needs.

At the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to the discoveries of German scientists, it became possible to produce inexpensive soap on production level, which gradually replaced the home.

But in recent times interest in everything natural and homemade is growing more and more. Therefore, soap making at home is becoming popular. Handmade soap has significant advantages:

Security measures

When making handmade soap at home, you will be working with a caustic substance - sodium hydroxide, or lye. In any form - grains, flakes, granules - it can damage various materials, peel paint, and, most importantly, burn skin and eyes.

Exercise extreme caution, wear gloves with high cuffs and use eye protection, also when you add lye to water. Avoid breathing its vapors. They are flammable, so ventilate the area when working.

If alkali gets on the skin, it must be neutralized with a solution of vinegar, if it gets on other objects, immediately remove it and wipe this place detergent.

Before starting work, make sure that children or pets will not interfere with you. Do not use foil, tin, wooden or aluminum containers when making soap. Take only glass containers, strong plastic, enameled or stainless steel dishes. Store your soap making materials out of reach of children.

How to make handmade soap at home?

Now that you're familiar with the precautions, we can get down to business.

To begin with, make sure that all the necessary ingredients are at your fingertips, it will be very inconvenient to look for them in the process. You will need:

  • Lye, namely caustic soda (in other words, caustic soda).
  • Water (or other liquid, according to the recipe).
  • Fat, oil.
  • Rubber gloves and eye protection.
  • Two mixing bowls. It is better if one has a spout (for easy pouring of liquid).
  • Kitchen scales.
  • Different spoons for mixing and measuring. At least one of heat-resistant plastic or stainless steel for stirring liquor, one of wood, whisk or rubber spatula. A measuring spoon will be needed when using essential oils.
  • Two accurate kitchen thermometers
  • Electric blender (preferably) - saves you a lot of effort when making handmade soap at home.
  • Measuring cup for liquids.
  • Soap molds. Best of glass, plastic, silicone or stainless steel. Wooden or cardboard can also be used, but only if they are lined with waxed or greased paper from the inside.
  • Rags or disposable towels to wipe up spilled liquid.

This is an indicative list, it will change depending on what kind of soap you are making and whether you add essential oils, fragrances, natural decorative elements and etc.

Measure seven times

When making homemade handmade soap at home, measure each ingredient accurately.

Whether you're making it from scratch or using scrap to make new pieces, the recipe must be strictly followed.

One inaccurate measurement can result in a soap that smells bad, is unattractive, or unusable.

To ensure a good result, you need: scales, 2 thermometers and the so-called alkali calculator or soap calculator. As a rule, this is an online service for calculating the required amount of ingredients.

Different oils require different amounts of lye, so make sure you know their saponification number.

How do you turn individual ingredients into a finished product?

There are three main ways to make handmade soap at home:

The most sophisticated handmade soap ever. We make from scratch

This method has two subspecies - cold and hot. The sequence of work in the first case:

hot way

The initial steps in such soap making are the same as in cold soap making, namely, up to the “trace” stage. Then we simply continue to cook the saucepan with the mixture in a water bath or in the oven (if it is possible to clearly maintain the required temperature in it). The liquid should be stirred periodically until it becomes gel-like. Then it will begin to harden and become like wax. So the soap is almost ready, it's time to add essential oils and other ingredients and pour into molds. With this manufacturing method, you do not have to wait a month for the product to be ready. Soap can be used in a day, but if you let it lie down for two days, it will only get better.

Which way to choose?

Each method has its pros and cons, as well as a lot of variations.

If you are a beginner, then you will like the second method - the easiest and cheapest. But since baby soap is opaque, it will turn out not very decorative. Therefore, if you want to make beautiful pieces, but are afraid to work with alkali, then choose method 1. But do not forget that the further you move away from lye and fat soaps, the more expensive the cost of the final product becomes and the less natural its composition becomes.

And if you carefully read the safety measures and set yourself up for serious and accurate work, then you can try to make homemade handmade soap from scratch. Of course, this is the most difficult, but also the most interesting way, but you control every ingredient that goes into the soap.

Space for creativity

Perhaps one of the main reasons why homemade soaps are so popular is the ability to use different ingredients and experiment with shape, color, scent and care properties. If you decide to do this business, then make the most of your freedom of choice.

When you make soap from scratch, you can use both animal fats and vegetable fats (based on sunflower or rapeseed oil). And instead of water, you can add a decoction, tea, milk.

Also added to the soap:

  • essential oils: rose, mint, rosemary, bergamot, vanilla, lavender, etc.;
  • vegetable oils such as palm, coconut, olive;
  • natural dyes: clay, spices, herbs;
  • decorative elements, such as flower petals;
  • scrubbing particles: grape seed powder, poppy seeds, loofah pieces, etc.

Your best bet is to find a basic homemade soap recipe that you enjoy and then experiment with additions to it.

However, feel free to learn more about the additional ingredients - some of them may be ineffective in soap, others may ruin it. Essential oils should be mixed with a carrier oil such as olive oil to neutralize their irritating properties.

As you work on the soap, your home will be filled with many scents. And you will inhale vapors of essential oils in high concentrations, which can cause allergic reactions. Therefore, choose them carefully and make sure that, just in case, there is an appropriate medicine in the first aid kit that suits you.

When you make homemade handmade soap at home, you will be left with small pieces or failed copies. Instead of throwing them away, use them. Rub and remake or sprinkle shavings in water when taking a bath, or add small pieces of leftover soap to new soap to create colorful splashes.

This option soap making for beginners will not discourage your desire to engage in creativity, will give results immediately. The fact is that novice soap makers often confuse making soap from the base and making soap from scratch. If you want to know how to make soap at home, then first “dissolve” these two concepts in your head.

“From scratch” means that you have to remember some basics of chemical processes. You will work with alkali and fatty oils, the soap making process in this case is long. And it’s better to switch to it after you get used to soap making from an industrial soap base.

That was the introduction, now my Photo master class. To watch the video of the master class, go to the very end of the article.

To make your own soap, you will need:

  • soap base transparent, about 100 g;
  • liquid dyes;
  • fragrances or fragrances;
  • cosmetic oil (apricot seed, grape seed, etc.);
  • a glass for melting the base;
  • a glass in which you will mix all the ingredients;
  • microwave or water bath;
  • spoons or sticks for stirring;
  • soap molds.

Step by step instructions with photos

Base melting

Cut the soap base into small cubes. This is easy to do with a regular knife.

Melt in a water bath, stirring constantly so that the base does not stick together. Even if this happened, do not be afraid - just here, in the container in which you melt the base, cut the sticky layer with a sharp knife and continue melting.

Many soap makers use the microwave, I also like to speed up the process. And cleaner in the kitchen. In the microwave, you can put a porcelain, glass cup with a base, even a simple plastic one will do if you already get used to it. temperature regime and you can adjust the power.

Set the "Defrost" mode, the weakest to begin with. Put the glass with the base in the microwave and turn it on for half a minute. Check how the base melts, if you didn’t see any changes, the cubes didn’t even melt, you can do it in two ways. Either increase the power by a little, or increase the time to 1-2 minutes.

Depending on the brand of your device, choose one or another option. It only seems incomprehensible and scary at first, then it will be easy - you already know your microwave inside and out!

So, the base melted and turned out in a glass of jelly. Be sure to stir well so that even a small piece of unmelted base does not remain.

Addition of oils, fragrances and dyes

Pour into a glass in which you will mix. It is convenient to use disposable plastic cups. I use them, of course, more than once, they are easy to wash after the process.

Put a few drops of base oil into the liquid base and stir.

Add the dye drop by drop, stirring constantly. Depending on the concentration of the dye, one to several drops will be required.

Sometimes I dilute a very “dense” dye with a little water.

And lastly, pour in the fragrance. I pour about half a teaspoon per 100 g so that the aroma is well felt.

Soap shaping

Pour the liquid soap into the prepared mold. Silicone does not need to be lubricated with oil or alcohol. If you work with plastic and are afraid that it will be difficult to remove from the mold later, then wipe the mold with oil.

Leave the poured soap to harden. As soon as it hardens, and this happens within half an hour or an hour, the soap can be used.

If you let it lie down for a few days, it will be much more pleasant, this has been noticed by many soap makers. Pre-wrap the soap in cling film.

  1. Read the article before going to the store
  2. Soap base goes on sale from different manufacturers and different quality. Some people like it more “fat”, someone likes it that quickly hardens. Only by trying, you can find your own basis that is convenient for you. To understand better, read the article about the soap base from Russian manufacturers.
  3. Do not pour more than one third of a teaspoon of oil per 100 g of soap base. Otherwise, your soap will not lather, there will be no foam, alas.
  4. Food colorings are usually sold very concentrated. Therefore, they sometimes need to be diluted with water. And do not make a very saturated color, the soap should remain transparent, like jelly. Yes, and colored foam is useless to you.
  5. Start working with silicone molds, there are no problems with them, they do not break, they do not melt at high base temperatures.
  6. Buy goods for soap making for beginners can in or search in nearby geographically.

Good luck with your soap making!

History of soap making

So, let's start our soap story, not some soap opera, but the real history of soap.

It is believed that this hygiene product appeared about three millennia BC. The first time about him was written 2200 BC. It was then that the Sumerians wrote about it on clay tablets, or rather about its manufacture. Despite the fact that so many millennia have passed, a similar manufacturing technology is used in our time.

There is one of the oldest documents, the Ebers Papyrus, which says that in ancient Rome, a substance made from ash and fat was used to wash hands. In order to improve the washing qualities of soap, they began to add soda, or rather mix it with ash.

For a long time it was believed that soap came to us from Rome. Because the first soap factory was found on the ruins of Pompeii. It has been a long time since people discovered the trick. The version they put forward turned out to be erroneous. In fact, it was not a soap factory, but the so-called laundry (fullonica).

There is a belief in the world, according to which the word soap (soap) came from Mount Sapo located in Ancient Rome. In fact, this is nothing more than a legend, because such a mountain does not exist.

Soap was not always used for its intended purpose. For example, the Arab doctor Avicenna prescribed this procedure to his patients when a person developed a rash or various skin diseases. He advised healthy people to use clay to cleanse the body.

In fact, what is now being produced in factories can hardly be called soap, since synthetic additives are used in its manufacture. Yes, and plant ash is almost never used today, because it is impossible to guarantee the purity of products (ash). Also, the technology that was used before is very complex and takes a lot of time. Therefore, now, instead of ash, alkali is used.

Many people, in the manufacture of soap, begin to abandon animal fats. They use components that have appeared not so long ago: for example CO2, silk, floral waxes and essential oils. Despite this, soap, which has been known to mankind for many thousands of years, remains to perform the same functions of cleaning the skin as before.

Essential Ingredients for Soap Making from Scratch

Probably almost every person who is going to learn how to make soap, thoughts run through his head that it should not only be fragrant, but also have an original, unlike anything form.

In fact, the way it is, because when cooking, you can use various molds in the form of hearts, favorite flowers or exotic animals. If you have specialized stores, then you can even buy multilayer molds there, with which you can combine several colors in one blank.

Many begin using children's sandbox molds in the beginning. If you love baking, you will surely have silicone molds, they are perfect for cooking.

You will also need two saucepans: a large one and a small one to make a water bath. In a large one, you pour water and put it on the stove, and in a small one, put the soap itself. By placing one inside the other, you can easily melt the workpiece. In general, you can use various devices for the manufacture of a water bath. You can also melt the soap base in a conventional microwave by placing the workpiece in a plastic bucket or glass.

You will also need a few plastic cups, toothpicks, a spoon or a wooden stick for stirring, the most common grater, a spray bottle with alcohol, and any paper towels or napkins.

We are done with the inventory, let's move on to the ingredients.

1.Essential oil.

If you want to give soap a fragrant aroma and soften the skin, you can not do without it. There are various flavors on the shelves, it's up to you to choose.

2. Dyes.

To dye soap in your favorite color, you need special dyes. They can also be replaced with natural ones, using vegetable or fruit juices. Personally, I used grapes, or rather its juice, in other matters, you choose.

3. Additives.

In addition to your favorite smell and color, so-called additives can be included in the composition of the soap. For example, to make a scrub, you can use crushed oatmeal, coffee beans, or walnut shells. One of the popular additives is coconut flakes.

You can also use honey, lemon or cream. Various useful herbs or dried berries from the summer. In general, it all depends on your imagination.

4. Loofah (optional)

With this ingredient, you can make soap with a washcloth, so let's say 2 in 1.

I think we figured out the inventory, now we go directly to the process itself.

Liquid soap from remnants

A lot of remnants that have probably accumulated in your kitchen can be successfully turned into liquid soap. A small handful is enough to get about 1 liter of product. Imagine how much savings that is. So get started right away.

Ingredients

  • remnants
  • Tincture of calendula
  • Food coloring
  • Glycerol

Cooking

1. First of all, put water on the stove, it will boil, and here we will arrange a water bath in order to melt the soap.

2. While the water is boiling, rub the remnants. For a liter serving, we need 50 grams.

3. We add 1 liter of water to them and put them in a water bath. You need to be prepared that the soap will not completely dissolve. There is nothing terrible in this.

4. When the main ingredients have dissolved, remove from the water bath.

5. The next step, add calendula tincture, two tablespoons. If there is none, anything containing alcohol will do, because that is what we need.

7. In order for the color of the soap to become uniform and beautiful, add a little food coloring. A couple of drops will be enough.

8. Now pour in 4 tablespoons of glycerin. Its role is to increase the viscosity and maintain the necessary moisture content of the soap. Our remnants are different in composition, but thanks to glycerin, everything will mix.

9. Mix the resulting mass well. After the reaction has occurred, it is necessary to strain everything, because there are large pieces that have not dissolved. For this we use a sieve.

10. Pour the finished raw material into a bottle. It must be allowed to cool before use.

After the soap has cooled down, it will have a natural natural mother-of-pearl, it will be no worse than a store-bought one. More is even better.

With this detergent, you can wash not only hands, but also dishes. And your mother and grandmother will be grateful for this.

A liter of liquid soap is ready, which we made from almost nothing.

Use on health.

How to make soap from soap base

Above, we looked at simpler cooking options. If you want to do it on professional level, turn it into a hobby or surprise friends and acquaintances, then this article is just for you.

Today I'll show you how I pour small pieces of soap base into molds. This applies to plastic molds that have convex elements. They can be played with different colors.

Everyone does it differently, so my method is not the only correct one. I will pour soap with a snowflake.

You will need

  • plastic molds
  • Soap base
  • Dye
  • Alcohol
  • Perfume

Let's move on to cooking

1. Melt the soap base in a water bath or microwave. Make sure the base doesn't boil.

2. After the base has become liquid, it can be painted with white dye. Make sure that it is not very hot, because many molds cannot withstand temperatures above 70 degrees.

3. To make the mold stand evenly, you can use a food container. We put a mold on top of it.

4. In order for the base to flow into small items, the mold must be sprinkled with alcohol. After that, carefully pour the base so that it fills the snowflake. Excess can be removed with a toothpick after hardening, this will happen within 10 minutes.

5. Prepare the soap base for the main layer, we will make it blue. I will paint with a special dye bought at the store.

6. When the resulting liquid has cooled down, you can add fragrance to it and pour it into the mold.

7. In order to ensure a good hitch, you need to scratch our snowflake with a toothpick. Spray with alcohol and pour. Spray again with alcohol to remove bubbles.

Well, that's all, you can wait until the soap hardens and you can get it.
