Scanning photographs, digitizing film, slides and negatives are not the only ones. Here you can order text scanning, digitization of books with subsequent recognition and saving in text format. Scanning and processing photos - after digitizing photos, we can retouch the photo, perform restoration, colorize.

Scanning film and negatives

Digitization is carried out on a film scanner, which allows you to scan film at a resolution of 4000 dpi. It is a professional machine for high resolution film digitizing and high performance. You can see an example of scanning a negative without enhancement and with enhancement (removal of scratches and dust, electronic retouching - color restoration, sharpening) just above “digitalICE and digitalGEM technologies”. Note that these technologies do not work when digitizing old black-and-white negatives; when scanning film in color, the technologies are relevant. Scanning film - the result exceeds the wildest expectations! Call!

We offer slide digitization and negative film scanning at 1200dpi, 2400dpi and 4000dpi. Example.

Scanning old photos

Additional services after digitization: frame cropping, photo rotation and color correction. When scanning photographic films and digitizing old photographs, a frame is always formed around the digital copy, since the scanned area is always larger than the original image. Also, when scanning, the picture may be upside down. After digitizing photos, color correction is relevant, since the scanning of photos occurs with a slight light - a minus of all flatbed scanners. All these shortcomings can be eliminated! Examples.

Digitizing slides and negatives

You can easily find a studio that will scan photos and digitize film, as well as scan slides. With large volumes of photographic materials in the studio, scanning will be done much faster and better than you can, and for sure you will receive a discount for the volume. What you should pay attention to:

  • Prices should be justified, the larger the volume, the cheaper it should be to digitize films and scan photos.
  • Deadlines - the studio should keep you informed on the deadlines, it is also possible to take the finished materials in parts.
  • Quality - contact a studio with professional equipment, and also pay attention to the list of digitization services, the more there are, the better the studio works.

Digitizing film at home

While a studio can digitize film professionally and save you time, you can try scanning film yourself. Pros of digitizing slides and negatives at home:

  • Possibility to choose what frames you need. Digitization of photographic films in the studio involves all the resulting frames.
  • Private shots, if you don't want anyone else to see them.

Purchase a scanner to scan slides and film. The more expensive the scanner, the better the digitization of film and slides. You can purchase a flatbed scanner with a slide module, the price varies between 3000-10000 rubles. You can also purchase a professional film scanner with electronic retouching, scratch and dust removal technologies. Such a device will cost 45,000 rubles and more. What you should pay attention to:

  • Speed. Some scanners digitize film at breakneck speed. Be prepared that this may affect the quality of film scanning.
  • Quality. It is desirable that the scanner supports a resolution of 4000 dots per inch (dpi) for scanning a slide. This setting allows you to digitize the negative in 32x48 quality.
  • Compatibility. Professional scanners connect via 1394 protocol, make sure your computer has one.

Flatbed scanner. You can digitize film using a conventional scanner for digitizing text and scanning books. Minuses this method consist in a small resolution of scanning a slide, the scanner has limitations in brightness, the film is digitized through glass, there are no special "chips" to improve the image. In this way, it is impossible to achieve the same quality of digitizing slides and films as in specialized studios.

Photographing a slide. What you need: a screen, a slide projector and a camera stand. Take a picture of the image on the screen with a digital camera, achieve optimal sharpness. The next step is to edit the photo in Photoshop.

Summarize. The cost of digitizing photographic films in the studio and the subsequent processing of photographs is quite adequate today. But the result may pleasantly surprise you! Consider whether it is better for you to trust the professionals of film digitizing and scanning slides or to conduct experiments at home. Pay attention to which studio you are going to entrust digitization. Some companies may lose or damage materials, and the saddest thing is that they are not responsible for this. 93 votes, score: 4,67 out of 5)

Film and slide scanners are available on the market in a wide variety of types and models. Products of well-known brands have significant differences, but at the same time, each manufacturer uses advanced scanning technologies in their devices. With a significant difference in the optional set, almost all slide scanners have high performance indicators, so it is difficult to compare them with each other. The choice of a particular scanner depends on the specific needs of the user - the type / format of scanned media, optical density, resolution, speed and other parameters.

Film Scanners: what is it and why is it needed?

Slide scanner - equipment for digitizing transparent media: negatives, slides, films. The devices have a wide range of functions - from removing defects in the original to posting scans on Internet resources. Typically, slide, photo, and film scanners are used in professional purposes– in photo studios, architectural and design bureaus, medical institutions(for processing radiographic images).

The most common equipment for digitizing transparent media are 35 mm film and small slide scanners. To scan large-format originals, flatbed scanners with a built-in or optional slide module are used. Such equipment is more versatile - it can be used to scan transparent media, as well as photographs and ordinary office (text / graphic) documentation.

Features of slide scanners

Film scanners use CCD sensors suitable for high-quality digitizing of both flat and bulk media. Another advantage of the equipment is high optical density (3DMax and higher). Devices with such indicators reproduce high-quality images with smooth transitions of colors and halftones.

Slide scanners and specialized flatbed scanners from well-known brands are equipped with built-in hardware. For example, Kodak's DigitalICE software or Epson's DustRemoval feature removes dust, scratches, grain, and other imperfections by processing media in the infrared.

Many Epson scanners use ReadyScanLED technology - by replacing obsolete fluorescent lamps with LED light sources, the devices do not need warm-up time (preparation for work takes less than 1 second), and energy savings reach 40%. In addition, the LED lamp eliminates heating and deformation of the scanned originals.

Overview of film scanners

Each of the popular models has its own characteristics. An overview of the main characteristics will help to make right choice depending on the needs of a particular business.

Epson Perfection V 370photo 85 - A4 flatbed scanner for digitizing films, photos, paper documents, 3D objects. Most image correction operations are performed automatically - for example, the firmware automatically aligns the edges of the media. Thanks to high resolution, the functions of removing defects and restoring color saturation, it is possible to obtain high-quality and clear scans from both film and paper media.

Epson Perfection V 550 Photo- A4 flatbed device for processing films, photos and documents with the option of sending / placing scans on network resources (websites, cloud storage, social networks). Thanks to the high resolution and optical density (3.4 DMax), the scanner accurately reproduces the slightest color shades. The flaws of the original are eliminated using Digital ICE technology. Options for editing the background and restoring color allow you to "revive" old photos without additional hardware settings.

Epson Perfection V600- A4 flatbed scanner capable of working with photo, paper, small format (35 mm) and medium format films / slides. Among the useful functions of the equipment are automatic alignment of the original, background correction, color restoration, and elimination of defects. The high quality of scans is ensured by excellent resolution and good optical density of 3.4 DMax.

Epson Perfection V700– a professional A4 flatbed scanner for digitizing film media of all major formats, photographs and text documents. The equipment uses a system of two lenses (Dual Lens System), thanks to which the optical density index reaches 4 DMax. Elimination of defects of the original is carried out using the DustRemoval and DigitalICE programs. The scanner package includes a wide range of devices for working with film media - limiters and holders of various formats.

HP Scanjet G 4010- A4 flatbed scanner with a built-in module for processing transparent media. The device is capable of solving a wide range of tasks - from digitizing small-format films to paper documents. Thanks to high resolution and unique 6-color scanning technology (96 bit), the color accuracy of finished scans is increased by 40% compared to other equipment of a similar class. Clarification of small details, removal of imperfections of the original and red-eye effect is performed using HP Real Life technology.

Many of us probably have old photographic films - color and black and white, and maybe even slides. What if you want to show your friends on social networks photos from your first matinee in kindergarten? You can contact a photo lab, or you can buy a slide scanner and convert your entire family photo archive into digital format yourself. Read about what slide scanners are and how much they can cost in our today's review.

Little has changed in the field of film and negative scanning in recent years - despite technological advances, either a special adapter for flatbed scanners or a specialized separate device is still required.

The layman will ask the question - why do I need this very slide adapter, and, moreover, a separate solution? The answer is simple: the difference between the scanning process is the same finished photo from the slide - not only in size. An additional problem is that the printed original can be easily illuminated with a flatbed scanner carriage, but the attitude towards film originals is completely different - they need to be seen through.

The second problem is the range of perception of opacity densities by the scanning heads of scanners. As a rule, household "tablet" has a small range.

The third difficulty is the supply of originals, because the images on the slides are quite small, and the film, as a rule, is also bent due to storage in reels, so the question automatically arises about the correct positioning of the original and the quality of the clamp so that the result is in focus and does not have geometric distortion.

At least two problems - the supply of materials and illumination - are solved by slide adapters, and the corresponding resolution and optical range, as a rule, provide separate solutions.

“Why should I scan films,” an inquisitive consumer will ask, “if I have digital camera?" The answer is simple - there are many old pictures taken at a time when even color film was a novelty and unprecedented luxury. Of course, they can be printed in the "old-fashioned" way, but usually the quality of slides and films does not improve with time - dust , scratches and much more greatly worsens their condition. And digital processing allows you to eliminate artifacts of this kind and print photos on modern devices.

As for the companies that today produce independent devices for scanning film originals, there are, in fact, few of them - these are either companies such as Konica, who have been dealing with any devices related to photography or processing of printed originals for a long time, and producing ultra-expensive solutions for photo labs, or "newcomers" as brands ion audio and Plustec, which have recently entered the market and are actively using new technologies in search of the optimal price / quality ratio.

Scanning films and slides up to 5000 rubles

The budget range of any devices is exactly what makes the bulk of sales, and the explanation for this is quite simple: if a consumer buys a device for the first time, he is unlikely to be able to take and give 10,000-20,000 rubles for an item, in frequent use or general need which he is not sure. At the moment, in Russia, as well as in many other countries, the percentage of professionals who do not spare any money for working tools is quite small.

Therefore, inexpensive slide scanners are the way to go for those who simply want to save old slides from family celebrations, restore lost photo albums from negatives, or restore old fairy tales from film projectors. Of course, such devices are far from photo labs in terms of quality, but the requirements for 10x15 cm printouts are also small, and most consumer photo printouts are in this format.

Such relatively inexpensive "workhorses" are divided into two classes - independent devices that scan films to flash drives, and USB devices that are connected to a PC and controlled by it. Of course, the division is conditional - most standalone slide scanners have the ability to connect to a PC.

USB slide scanners

As a rule, inexpensive USB film scanners do not have their own screen and are generally quite simplified - in fact, all configuration is carried out in proprietary or specialized software. We have summarized in the table the most popular representatives of this segment.

In general, we can note the prevalence of brand products ION AUDIO. As expected, each device, regardless of price, comes with appropriate frames for placing film originals.

ION SLIDES2PC EXPRESS with frames for film originals

Despite the similarity of the matrices used - each has an optical resolution of 1800x1800 dpi, the capabilities of the devices are slightly different - for example, you can pay extra for fast slide feed mechanisms in ION SLIDES2PCMK3. This will significantly increase the processing speed: it is much easier to put the slides right in the frames and quickly change them, there are fewer problems with sorting already processed slides and you do not need to disassemble the slide frame many times.

ION SLIDES2PCMK3

And in ION PICS2PC you can, moreover, scan photos using the included frames in three sizes (9x13, 10x15 and 13x18 cm), and the device itself is housed in a fairly compact case.

ION PICS2PC

To change the operating mode, you need to move both switches on the body to the Photo Scanner or Film Scanner position - to scan photographs or film originals, respectively. The selected mode with the correct position of the switches is highlighted by a green LED.

Compared to the ION series, the slide scanner Plustec it does not look so bright - the price is higher with equal opportunities, besides, the reduced bit depth of color reproduction will certainly make itself felt when editing full-color images.

Plustek SmartPhoto F50

True, the price is generally at the level of conventional flatbed scanners. However, as mentioned earlier, slide scanners have a wider dynamic range, and a flatbed scanner also requires a slide adapter.

Standalone slide scanners

Technically, stand-alone slide scanners do not differ much from USB scanners: a screen is added, simple controls and the ability to connect a drive - as a rule, an SD card reader is used. Why are such devices in demand? The answer is very simple: not all people have the time / opportunity / desire to deal with a PC, and a device of this kind allows you to do even without a laptop. The consumer simply takes their slides/negatives, puts them in the machine and gets the output pictures, most often in JPEG format, which can then be viewed on any device compatible with a memory card or edited if a computer is available.

At the moment, the following devices are sold in Russia:

In fact, competitors ION PICS2SD and IONFILM2SDMK2 absent - the specific purpose of the device and the price range affect. The capabilities of the devices are close to their USB counterparts, the price of independence from a PC was an increased cost - the difference amounted to 1000 rubles, which is quite justified in the absence of a PC.

ION PICS2SD

However, nothing prevents you from connecting them to a PC, but IONFILM2SDMK2 can transfer data to . Given the active promotion of devices in recent years in Russia, we can say that this feature will be quite in demand.

IONFILM2SDMK2

Additionally IONFILM2SDMK2 has a composite TV output, which makes it possible to simultaneously show slides on the screen of virtually any TV. True, it is better not to dream about the advantages of a Full HD LCD screen here - the low resolution of the analog input will have a rather strong effect. There are many possibilities for using the TV output - for example, the author of these lines thought about the possibility of showing children old Soviet filmstrips, displaying them directly on the TV screen, and using a film feed adapter for pulling.

ION FILM2SDMK2 with roll film feed adapter

In addition, when switching the original mode, we have the opportunity to get a positive from a negative original even at the preview stage. For example, this is how we got the cat from the negative film (we rotated the image using the built-in control).

Scanning films and slides from 5000 rubles

What awaits us in price range above 5000 rubles? Devices with an extrapolated, and closer to tens of thousands per device, optical resolution of 7200 dpi are already starting here. As the resolution and dynamic range increase, so does the price, and by no means in a linear progression. As an example, we took the characteristics of several devices of different price segments and summarized them in a table to clearly show the ratio of features and price.

Of course, the quality of scans from a device for 3-5 thousand rubles will never reach the same Nikon Super Cool Scan 5000, but the possibilities budget slide scanners have never been compared to professional devices - any comparison would be simply inappropriate.

Nikon Super Cool Scan 5000

Devices of this level will never become mass solutions for the simple reason that the cost is really quality solutions is available only to photo studios, and it is much cheaper for the average person to contact these laboratories than to purchase such a device at home - it simply cannot pay for itself.

Conclusion

In relation to the price, we can say that in the budget range it is still worth paying attention to products. ION AUDIO- Their slide scanners are very compact and well made, and slightly more expensive solutions are also autonomous. In general, with approximately the same solution matrix from ION have a wide range of ergonomic additions, which allows you to choose a device for yourself at an extremely low price, and even with the ability to do without a computer at all.

However, the low resolution of the matrices of budget slide scanners imposes its limitations, and if you are interested in professional level processing slides, then either very impressive expenses will be required, or you will have to contact specialized photo labs.

In our opinion, best device brand ION AUDIO in terms of "price/opportunity" ratio, at the moment it is IONFILM2SDMK2. It does not know how to scan photos, but the difference in price compared to ION PICS2SD allows you to additionally purchase an inexpensive flatbed scanner for this purpose, and autonomy, along with the ability to work both with a PC and TV, and with iPad(via a special adapter) are quite remarkable. And previewing images on the built-in screen, combined with adjustment options such as rotation and flip, slightly increases the efficiency of working with this device. In general, due to the budget price and interesting features, this product can be considered as a good gift.

“A well-known problem of almost any Russian family is old photographs and films. How many times, looking at the shelves littered with gradually fading photographs and boxes from under the then most popular Svema-65 film, did you (and I too) take a terrible oath, what if you choose the time, sit down, scan all this wealth, after which you will get a normal modern digital collection, which is convenient to watch and can be sorted into categories literally in a day, and put on the Internet so that other relatives can watch ... In general, such plans are good for everyone, with the exception of one single moment: they are almost never carried out if the collection has accumulated rather big.

Because scanning photos is a tedious, tedious and time-consuming task, and scanning films is easier to hang yourself.

But technology does not stand still, and now, as I found out, there are simple and convenient scanners for both films and photographs, which simplify this whole process so much that I and millions of other users have a chance to digitize their family collection on their own. ." Alex Exler.

The representative office of AVE offers you slide scanners adapted for Russian users. Complete with all scanners is a complete instruction in Russian. All software for the computer also in Russian. Considering that many people buy slide scanners as a gift for their parents and people who are not very familiar with a computer, this is an important factor. You can be sure that your gift will not cause problems and will be used with gratitude.

Model FS119 connects to a computer and allows you to see the image from the film on the screen and save it to your hard drive.

The remaining models are stand-alone devices, they do not need a computer to work, they can be used in any convenient location, as well as they are convenient for older people who are not very computer savvy.

Please note that AVE slide scanners are not professional devices and their quality corresponds to the price level. The scanner is selected in the same way as the camera, you do not need to expect quality from a device for 3-5 thousand rubles reflex camera. If you need to see the faces of old friends and upload memorable shots to the Internet, our scanners are a convenient and inexpensive solution. If you are an advanced photographer, you see lens bokeh and detail, then you need a slide scanner that costs an order of magnitude more expensive, just like your camera.

Choosing a slide scanner

Many families carefully store analog photo archives, which include not only paper prints, but also negative films and slides placed in frames for easy viewing on overhead projectors. If someone in the family was engaged in photography professionally, then these archives take up an extremely large amount of space. Unfortunately, at home it is almost impossible to provide ideal storage conditions for film photographic materials; as a result, the film warps and cracks, the emulsion crumbles, and precious captured moments of the past are lost forever.

Moreover, many professionals, for various (objective and subjective) reasons, still prefer analog photography, but today not even every editorial office of a magazine or newspaper will accept such pictures, where they switched to a more convenient digital photo a long time ago. In addition, not everyone is able to shell out several thousand dollars for a mirror digital camera High Quality, despite the fact that an analog camera of the same class costs three times cheaper, or even more. Finally, older analog camera lenses can generally be used in digital models. price category more than 2000 dollars. In addition, in this case, an unpleasant problem arises: due to an increase in the real focal length by about one and a half times, compared to a film camera, the lens loses the ability to take pictures with wide angle review.

To save analog photo archives and in general to digitize images from film originals, a special kind of scanner is used - slide scanners or film scanners (from the English film - "film"). These devices are very different from the flatbed scanners that many people are familiar with, as they are designed specifically for scanning small, high-resolution, transparent originals. It should be noted that in recent times a significant part of the "tablets" is equipped with built-in modules for scanning slides, but the vast majority of such devices are unable to cope with this task at a more or less acceptable level - we will talk about the reasons for this a little later. However, there are rare exceptions, for example, the Epson Perfection 4990 Photo flatbed scanner, but these exceptions only confirm the rule, especially considering the fact that at a price (about $570) the mentioned scanner is not much inferior to specialized devices, and, in fact, is a flatbed scanner. performance of the slide scanner.

The fundamental difference between a slide scanner and a "tablet" is the impossibility of scanning opaque originals (with the exception of the same Epson 4490 Photo). The second important difference is that slide scanners do not use cheap scanning elements based on the CIS-line (from the English Contact Image Sensor - "contact image sensor"), since they do not provide the depth of field required for high-resolution film scanning. All slide scanners are built on the basis of a CCD-line (aka CCD - from the English. Charge Coupled Device - "charge-coupled device"), moving along one axis. If a single CCD sensor is installed in the scanner, a color image is formed using three filters, and three passes are required for digitization. In the vast majority of modern models, three CCDs are installed, so the image is digitized in one pass. Some scanners implement multi-pass scanning to minimize errors or "noise" during image capture.

For film scanning high optical resolution is required. Judge for yourself: the width of the most common film is only 35 mm, but this is the width of the entire film, including margins and perforations, and the width of the frame itself is about 10 mm less! Therefore, the optical resolution of slide scanners is at least 2400 dots per inch (dpi), and the best models have a resolution of 4000, 4800, 5400 dpi and more. Although today technologies allow to achieve much higher resolution, its significant increase does not make sense, since the grain size of the finest film itself will be noticeably larger than the pixel size.

The interpolation or program resolution for slide scanners is an even more ridiculous parameter than for flatbed scanners, because optical resolution in most cases more than covers all the possibilities of film. When scanning at 4000 dpi, we get a 20-megapixel image, which is the envy of the vast majority of professional digital cameras.

The most important parameter of the scanner is the dynamic range or optical density. This value is calculated as the decimal logarithm of the ratio of the light intensity of the original to the light that has passed through it. How more value this setting, the better the scanner is able to reproduce smooth color and grayscale transitions. The maximum possible theoretical optical density value of 4.0 D means that the original is completely opaque or completely absorbs light, i.e. he is black. The minimum possible value of the dynamic range of 0.0 D, respectively, indicates that the original is completely transparent or it is perfectly white.

Conventional flatbed scanners are not well suited for scanning transparent originals precisely because they have too low a dynamic range - from 1.8 D to 3.0 D. Films, especially negative ones, have a higher optical density - from about 3.0 D to 3.6 D, so specialized slide scanners are able to work in this range. A higher optical density of film originals is extremely rare in practice, so you should not strive to buy a scanner with the highest possible dynamic range. 3.2 D - 3.6 D is quite enough.

It is necessary to take into account one more parameter of the scanner - the depth or bit depth of the color representation. Its value, indicated in bits, indicates the maximum number of color shades that can be processed by the scanner, in a word, color depth characterizes the quality of color reproduction. Modern scanner models have 42- or 48-bit analog-to-digital converters, that is, each color - red, green and blue - is described by 14 or 16 bits of information. However, in reality, the color depth typical for computer technology is 24 bits, and the 48-bit internal representation of information allows minimizing analog noise and quality loss when using various image conversion algorithms. In addition, support for high color depth in some cases allows you to correct the image directly at the scanning stage at the driver level.

By the way, many popular graphic editors are generally unable to work with 48-bit color, and almost the only exception is Adobe Photoshop, and even then it can be considered popular only by the number of its pirated copies. But even in this software package, many editing operations are performed with 24-bit precision, and even an inexpensive flatbed scanner guarantees such output bit depth.

Scanning speed for slide scanners is an unprincipled parameter, the main thing is quality. As mentioned above, some models can perform multi-pass scanning, which significantly increases image acquisition time, designed to minimize random noise. Professional models, of course, work faster than amateur and semi-professional ones, but the price of these scanners can differ by an order of magnitude.

As for the interfaces for connecting slide scanners to a personal computer, the leadership here is held by the universal USB interface. More expensive models use IEEE 1394 (FireWire) and SCSI-2 interfaces, and boards with the appropriate controllers are often included in the package.

Slide scanners, unlike "tablet" scanners, are equipped with various image enhancement hardware technologies aimed at eliminating defects in the original directly during the scanning process. The most famous and widespread technology of this type, used in scanners from various manufacturers, is Digital ICE, developed by Applied Science Fiction ("Applied Science Fiction"), which is now part of the American concern Kodak. Digital ICE is designed to eliminate scratches and dust particles from transparent originals without affecting the quality fragments of the frame.

Digital ICE works as follows: simultaneously with conventional scanning, the film is scanned at an angle with infrared rays that scatter in places of defects, and then the result is recorded simultaneously with the main image in the form of a D-channel or "mask". After that, the D-channel is superimposed on the resulting image, and the defects are replaced with interpolated data. Unfortunately, this technology does not work with black and white images, since the silver used in the emulsion does not transmit infrared rays. A similar Digital ICE technology has been developed by Canon - it is called Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement (FARE).

In addition, ASF has developed software technologies such as Digital GEM, which eliminates image graininess, Digital ROC, which "pulls" color on faded originals, and Digital DEE/SHO, which dynamically expands the exposure range. All these technologies, including Digital ICE, are combined in the Digital ICE4 Advanced package. Of course, scanning at once with all the technologies included in this package takes much more time than usual and requires a powerful computer, but the result, in most cases, is worth it. At the very least, the same actions with similar plug-ins in Photoshop will require much more effort and time.

In conclusion, we note that as a slide scanner its price speaks best of all: the higher it is, the better the mechanics and optics, color reproduction and image processing algorithms. A driver for a high-quality scanner can, at times, outperform even the most complex graphics editor, and since it is "sharpened" for a specific model, the results of image processing will be much more predictable.
