What do you need Wi-Fi at home. Wi-Fi Internet in a private house

I decided to raise a very interesting question and deal with Internet access in the villages. Not just with Internet access, but with access via Wi-Fi wireless technology. Simply put, we will consider different variants, with the help of which you can organize the distribution of the Internet via Wi-Fi in your private house, in the village.

It seems to me that this is very actual question, and since I myself am from the village (although now I spend more time in the city), but, with my parents, I, of course, organized the Internet and distribution via Wi-Fi. Yes, and the younger brother connects his tablet, smartphone and computer. Plus, more.

I think that this article will be very interesting for everyone who lives in villages and at the same time wants to have access to the Internet, and not from one device, as is usually the case when using a GPRS, 3G, or 4G modem. Now, people are actively buying modern smartphones, tablets, TVs, laptops, which, of course, have the ability to connect to Wi-Fi. Yes, yes, not only in cities, each apartment has several devices that can be connected to the Internet.

The situation with Internet access, both in Ukrainian and Russian villages, is not very cheerful. Of course, I did not conduct any research, therefore, I will draw a conclusion from what kind of Internet they use with us.

ADSL. Through a regular landline phone

In Ukraine, this is usually the provider Ukrtelecom. It provides internet ADSL technologies. If you have a phone, and the provider provides access to the Internet, then this is probably the best option in terms of price / speed / quality. My friend has the internet.

But, not everything is so good and simple. For example, in my village, there is no way to connect ADSL. Even if there is a landline phone. The provider talks about the poor quality of the lines. There are many such cases. Therefore, residents of such villages use a different Internet connection, which I will discuss below.

If you have Internet through a regular phone, and you want to distribute it via Wi-Fi, then this is not difficult. Usually (probably at the request of the client), ADSL providers are now installing modems that can distribute Wi-Fi.

If, however, you have an ADSL modem without Wi-Fi, then you can simply buy wifi router, connect it with a cable to the modem (the connection diagram will be approximately as in instructions), and connect your devices via Wi-Fi within a radius of the house, or even not far outside the house (in the yard).

Internet via USB modem (3G, 4G) and distribution via Wi-Fi

If there is usually no cable Internet, and there is no way to connect ADSL (or no desire) then use wireless GPRS, 3G, or 4G internet. In my village, almost everyone who has Internet access uses 3G (CDMA) from Intertelecom. I also have the same internet. It does not have to be Intertelecom, there are also wireless Ukrtelecom, PEOPLEnet, MTS, CDMA Ukraine and others.

Russia has its own providers. We will not talk about the pros and cons of each provider. If you choose, then see which provider has the best coverage in your area (you can ask support, or look at the coverage map on the provider's website), and then already look at the prices for paying for the Internet and for equipment.

In my region, for example, the best option is Intertelecom. Plus, word of mouth πŸ™‚ Well, you know what I mean, this is a village, everyone knows what kind of Internet you have, etc.

There are no special difficulties when connecting wireless Internet. We bought a modem, made a connection, connected the modem to the computer, set it up and use it. Here is an example instruction: β€œβ€œ.

But, the problem is that the USB modem can only be connected to one computer or laptop. More precisely, the Internet can only work on one device at a time. If you have a laptop, then you can try to configure the distribution of the Internet via Wi-Fi, according to this instruction. Your laptop will take the Internet from the USB modem and distribute it to smartphones, tablets and other devices. But, not the fact that it will work.

Previously, a TP-Link TL-MR3220 router worked for me according to this scheme (about the setting of which, read in article). But unfortunately it broke. And now, for almost a year, in my private house, the Internet is distributing a router. And I am very pleased with them.

True, the speed that Intertelecom gives out is not always encouraging. Judge for yourself: if you download something at 4-5 in the morning, then the speed is 250-300 Kb / s. And for example in the evening, the speed is 30 Kb / s. They have very busy base stations. Although, I'm not a strong expert in this. Moreover, the price was recently raised on all tariffs πŸ™ .

Here are some more tips on how to increase your 3G internet speed: . If the network in the village is very poor, then installing a special antenna can help. I also wrote about this in the article.

A few more ways

About satellite Internet, I probably will not write much. Since he is not very in the subject. But, it is very expensive. There are expensive tariffs and equipment. If I'm wrong, please correct me, you can write your opinion in the comments.

As for GPRS/EDGE, these are already slightly outdated options. The speed there is very low. But, as an option, this method should also be considered. Now almost all mobile operators provide not very expensive Internet. And, you can use your phone as a modem by connecting it to your computer.

And if you have a modern smartphone, then most likely it has the ability to launch an access point. What it is? You set up the Internet on your smartphone, and launch the β€œWi-Fi router” (as this function is called on HTC smartphones). Phone regular internet (from mobile operator) distributes over Wi-Fi. That is, your smartphone acts as a router. You can connect laptops, other phones, etc. to it. I will write more about this in more detail.

conclusions

The best way to surf the internet a private house in the village, it's ADSL (if possible), and a modem with Wi-Fi, or a simple modem + Wi-Fi router.

If there is no landline phone, or the provider does not allow you to connect ADSL Internet, then we are looking for a 3G / 4G Internet provider, connect, buy a Wi-Fi router with USB modem support, and set up Wi-Fi distribution in your home. When choosing a router, be very careful that it is β€œfriends” with your modem. I wrote about this in an article with tips for choosing, the link to which is above in the article. Or, buy mobile wifi router with built-in modem. But, it's not suitable for everyone. They have a smaller range of the wireless network, and a limit on the number of connected devices (not all).

Now, in the villages, they are just beginning to actively connect to the Internet. And in a year or two, they will begin to actively organize wireless networks in their homes. So, my article should be useful.

If I missed something, wrote it wrong, or you have questions, then write in the comments. I will be glad to answer your question, or supplement the article with interesting information. Good luck! Internet in every home! πŸ™‚

Today, most modern apartments and houses are equipped with wireless Wi-Fi, which allows you to freely access the Internet for all computers and mobile gadgets. If you do not yet have Wi-Fi at home, then most likely you have opened this article to correct the situation.
So what is needed for WiFi connections at home? Below we will look at the main steps, where, in fact, you need to start in order to set up wireless Internet at home.

What do you need to connect Wi-Fi at home?

Step 1: conclusion of an agreement with the provider

This step can be skipped if you already have Internet connected at home, but it works exclusively by wire.

Today, Russian providers offer users three types of Internet connections: ADSL, FTTB and xPON.

You can check whether your house is connected to the services of a particular provider on the official website, where, as a rule, there is a page for checking the connection by house number. The situation is such that even in large Russian cities on sparsely populated streets, there is no provider equipment in the houses, which means that the only option is to use ADSL, which is offered by the operator (aka provider) of telephone communications.

As a rule, the provider's website offers to choose one of the desired tariffs, each of which differs in the available Internet speed and additional features. So, as a rule, the cheapest tariff will provide a limited Internet connection speed during the day and without restrictions at night.
An expensive tariff will provide Internet without restrictions, but will also allow you to connect IP-TV with the provision of a certain number of free HD channels.

The choice of tariff is made solely on the basis of your financial capabilities and preferences. But we draw your attention to the fact that if you are not going to purchase a separate Wi-Fi router, see that it is provided free of charge by the provider at the selected tariff.

Having chosen a tariff, you will usually be asked to either make a call to the provider, or fill out a form to call a specialist.

Further, at the agreed time, a specialist comes to you, who concludes a service agreement with you, provides equipment, and immediately connects it (the task is easier if the provider provides its own router).

Step 2: Purchasing a Wi-Fi Router

In the event that you have a wired Internet connection or if you were not provided with this equipment when concluding an agreement with the provider, you must purchase it separately.

If you purchase a router separately, then this task must be approached with all responsibility, taking into account many nuances when choosing. How to choose the right Wi-Fi router for your home has already been described on our website.

Step 3: Connecting the router to the computer

So, you have everything to set up the Internet - all that remains is to set it up. Until the router is configured, Wi-Fi will not work on it. You must first connect the router to the computer.

Technology wireless internet networks have become quite dense in the life of a modern person. We constantly hear such words as wi-fi, router, 3G, and others, one way or another related to Internet technologies. The Internet is used almost everywhere: in shops, in transport, in cafes and restaurants, in public places equipped with wireless access points, but with a little effort, you can organize home wifi internet to be able to connect to the Internet of any available device anywhere in the apartment. This is not at all difficult to do, and with some skills, time will be spent in just a few minutes.

Features of organizing a wireless network

Usually, when connecting to a WiFi access point, it is considered that a connection will be made to global network and Internet access. This is not entirely true. A wireless connection is the same association of computers or other devices in a local area network, as well as using cables. The only difference is technology. Naturally, combining home resources with the resources of an Internet provider and access to the Internet will added benefit, but this is far from the only scope for home WiFi. As an example, when using home wifi only for internal needs, this is the organization of a media server that stores movies, music or photos, and to which all users of the home network can connect for viewing.

In order to make a wireless network for the home, inexpensive access points or Wi-Fi routers are usually used. When setting up a wireless network, there are several factors to consider:

  • data transfer rate within the network;
  • protection against unauthorized access;
  • the range of the access point, i.e. transmitter power;
  • location of the access point in the apartment.

Given these factors, you can organize a wireless network anywhere with maximum efficiency. Highly important point is the correct location of the transmitter in the room. If a wired network is organized, then each device or computer is connected via wires, and only their quality and length affect the connection speed. Wireless networks are a bit more complicated. The radio signal is transmitted over the air, and interference may occur during its propagation. These interferences depend on the material and thickness of the walls, on the finishing material, on the power of the transmitter, interference can also occur from objects in the apartment.

The optimal location for the router is approximately in the middle of the apartment and as high as possible to the ceiling. Usually this place is in the corridor, at a point equidistant from the rest of the rooms. Such placement will provide the most uniform distribution of the signal over the entire area. Of course, you can put the router on a table or a system unit in one of the rooms, but then you should not expect that the signal will be the same power throughout the apartment.

The speed of information transfer in the network depends on the selected WiFi standard - 802.11b/g/n. Modern models of routers and mobile devices support all communication standards. In the standard with the index n, the speed will reach 150 Mbps under ideal conditions. But it is also worth considering the fact that if a client that does not support the n standard connects to the router and works, for example, on 802.11g, then automatically all devices on the network will switch to work in this mode, i.e. will operate at speeds up to 54 Mbps.

Connecting and configuring the router

Usually, almost all Internet providers provide their customers with wired Internet access. This means that a twisted pair cable is laid from the provider's managed switch to the client's apartment. In this case, the function of the provider is only to provide access to the Internet or to the resources of its network. Not many providers help their customers with setting up routers, organizing a home network, or such services are done on a paid basis. Actually set up home wifi internet easier than it seems. To do this, you need to adhere to the following algorithm, which is suitable in most cases:

  • Internet access is configured according to the settings issued by the provider;
  • Internet television (IPTV) is configured if the provider provides such a service;
  • wired connections are configured (by and large, only internal IP addresses change if desired);
  • the wireless connection is configured by specifying the access point ID and security settings;
  • changing the password to enter the router configuration page;
  • access policies are configured, such as port forwarding, access to resources and various servers.

The settings of each router are purely individual, but the operation algorithm described above is suitable for each of them. If the router is not new, but has already been used for connection, then before setting it is necessary to reset the installed configurations to the factory settings. On each router, this is done by pressing and holding the "Reset" button for 10-15 seconds. This button is located on the rear panel, where the connectors for connecting cables are displayed. On some models, the reset button may be located on the bottom. To understand whether a configuration reset has occurred, it is enough to pay attention to the power indicator on the front panel. It should blink frequently.

If you are not sure which address in the browser you need to enter in order to get to the settings page, just turn the router over and β€œpeep” this information. Down in without fail a plate or sticker is attached on which the router address, user name and access password are written. There is also information about the device address, which may be required if the provider filters clients by MAC. Detailed settings routers with concrete examples settings can be found on the Internet or on this website.
