The first incident happened to me as a “makovod” after 4 months normal operation behind a MacBook...

Dear Reader, if you have an Apple Mac computer (whether laptop or desktop) that is equipped with a slot-loading optical drive, then I strongly recommend that you read this material to prevent such a situation.

So, it all started with the fact that I wanted to write data to disk on a PC computer. The process, for some unknown reason, ended due to an error. After that, Windows refused to read this DVD-RW disc.

Apparently, due to the fact that the disk was only “half-written”, the system cannot identify it.

Usually, in such a situation, I try to erase unwritten data from a disk on another computer. Oddly enough - very often helps!

This time I decided to try to clean up a DVD-RW disc using Mac.

Inserted, as usual, the disk into the drive; the laptop confidently “swallowed” it, but the system refused to read it. Finder did not recognize the connected drive. Mounting it manually did not work either.

I decided that the disk was probably completely damaged and decided to just throw it away.

But not everything is so simple:

MacBook refused to eject it. The disk inside is spinning non-stop and the eject button does not work.

This is where the main problem started...

If you own a MacBook or iMac desktop computer, then you most likely noticed that Apple did not provide mechanical removal of optical drives in their computers.

Compare: on a regular PC laptop, it is possible to eject the disk mechanically. As a rule, there is a small hole, in the presence of which you can, say, using a straightened paper clip, force the tray to open:

Unfortunately, it is not possible to remove a disk mechanically from a MacBook:

(the hole on the left is the Kensington Lock)

Then I realized the full extent of the problem ...

A feverish monitoring of all kinds of forums on the network began in order to search for “colleagues in misfortune” ...

It turned out that this problem is quite common among users of Apple laptops, and often it can not do without a service center ...

However, users are trying to solve it different ways. From quite banal: like manipulating terminal commands, to quite rude: forcibly ejecting the disk physically with tweezers; prying it from below with a credit card, etc.

Naturally, I didn’t want to “act physically” somehow, especially since all these manipulations end, as a rule, with an appeal to a service center. And that didn't appeal to me at all. It's not even that the nearest service center is 400 kilometers away, but that you need to spend a lot of time on it.

The search continued and software methods still found...

I tried to act through the terminal: enter commands to eject the disk - to no avail; I tried to enter OpenFirmware at boot (reference: something like an analogue of BIOS, you can say so) and enter commands to force eject the disk - also to no avail.

A very interesting method helped me, which I did not find right away: to force eject the disk on reboot, you need to press the right touchpad button and hold it until the disk is ejected.

Here it worked! And with great relief, I moved the drive from the MacBook's tray to the trash can.

Dear owners of Apple computers!

And Based on my experience and what I have learned about the problem of building up optical discs in a drive, I want to give you a few practical advice to help you minimize the risk of a problem:

1. Always pay attention to which side you insert the disc. Do not mix up the sides and do not insert the disc in reverse! In this case, extraction problems may occur.

2. Do not insert into the drive discs that are quite severely damaged (obvious scratches or chips)!

3. Do not use optical discs that cannot be read on other computers or are read from with great difficulty(very slowly, with the freezing of individual programs or the operating system as a whole, while accessing the disk)!

4. If the disk is still stuck, do not try to pull it out mechanically: do not shake the laptop, do not put foreign objects in the drive and do not try to insert another disk into the drive!

By doing this, you can permanently damage the drive, and then you can’t do without contacting a service center.

5. Do not try to disassemble the laptop yourself and try to remove the optical drive from the case! These actions can lead to the failure of the laptop!

If no software methods helped, then it is better to contact the service center.

Often from iMac users on thematic forums such questions “sound”: “Why does the device not “read” the USB flash drive? Why can't I delete a file from a flash drive? The answers often lie in the compatibility of the MAC and Windows file systems, but there may be other reasons that can only be identified with professional diagnostics. Let's consider all this in more detail.

Format conflict

In most cases, if the removable drive was formatted in Windows, iMac will not allow you to transfer files to the USB flash drive. This is not a breakdown, but a feature of the two systems. Exactly the same situation will be with the reading of the "Makov" flash drive on the OS from Microsoft. However, there are certain formats that make it possible to use devices on both operating systems.

In the menu for formatting a removable disk, several options are given to choose from, among them:

  1. Journaled (Mac OS Extended) - exclusively for Apple products.
  2. FAT (MS Dos) - universal format for OS from Microsoft, it is necessary to select it so that the flash drive can be opened on different devices;
  3. ExFAT - does not always work without a Windows update or Service Pack installation.

If the iMac does not format the flash drive, it is best to contact the specialists, perhaps the problem lies deep in the system.

Other reasons

In addition to format incompatibilities, iMac does not “read” a flash drive often and for the following reasons:

  • removable disk failure
  • port failure;
  • unlicensed software;
  • lack of drivers for reading the disk;
  • not enough virtual memory to read;
  • the presence of a virus both inside the system and on the flash drive itself.

The last aspect is a fairly common case, especially if the flash drive serves several independent computers, for example, it is used in an office. If there are malicious files on it, the anti-virus system can simply block reading of the entire device or report a damaged file (if the anti-virus has such an opportunity).

The wizard will be able to find out the specific reason when diagnosing a computer. Especially qualified help is needed when a removable disk is successfully read and written on other devices with similar software. Sometimes it is much cheaper and easier to immediately take the equipment to the workshop than to do independent search and troubleshooting.
