Do-it-yourself repair of loose hinges on a Macbook Pro. DIY Repair Loose Hinges on Macbook Pro Professional Solution

On my Macbook Pro, I unexpectedly found that the top cover when closed was a little uneven when I tried to move it - it successfully moved with little effort.

In general, I did not notice any changes in operation, only a strange stagger in a position of more than 90 degrees, but when I grabbed the bottom near the left hinge and tried to move it back and forth, I found that the screen, together with the lid, was loose and walked by 5-7mm . And then I remembered what I had read - that Macbook hinges often break, but they do not change separately, only together with the lid, and this is essentially the same as changing the matrix, glass and lid.

It is clear that the left hinge takes on a large load, since most often we change the position of the corner of the screen with just one left hand for the upper left edge. In the hope that I would be able to eliminate the backlash in the hinges of the laptop with my own hands, I set about repairing it.

In this article, I will share my experience on how you can restore yourself normal work hinges or replace them with new ones in Macbook Pro and Macbook Air series laptops.

If you have little experience in repairing equipment and you have “straight hands”, then if you carefully follow all the instructions, you will successfully eliminate the backlash in the hinges.

Of course, I want to warn you that self-repair can lead to a complete breakdown of your beloved Macbook, so be aware that you can completely break your laptop. I confess that I myself was very worried that I could damage something or some flute would lose contact or be damaged, so do repairs at your own peril and risk, or give it to a repair shop.

Step one: remove the bottom cover. We turn off the laptop, put it on a lighted surface, laying a cloth or other suitable material under the bottom, which will eliminate the likelihood of scratches and scuffs on the top cover. We unscrew 10 screws with a Phillips screwdriver and put them separately in a small box. Turning the laptop with a black plastic insert at the bottom of the screen towards you, lift the lid freed from fasteners and remove it. As a result, the internal structure of the Macintosh opens before us.

Step two: disconnect connectors and cables. First of all, touch the cd-room case or the aluminum case itself with your finger to remove static. Next, carefully remove the battery connector. After the battery is disconnected and the board is de-energized, we proceed to disconnect the cables and connectors. In the lower left corner, disconnect the connector from the matrix, it snaps into place with a metal bracket. Next, disconnect the speaker connector (black and red 4 wires) and the camera cable.

Step three: turn off the column and all the wires from the top cover. The column is a black plastic elongated rectangle, it must be unscrewed and all wires disconnected that restrict access to the three screws securing the right hinge. As a result, your speaker should lie away from its place, and all the wires coming from the screen are disconnected. Next, we unscrew the wire clamps, three screws securing the right and left loops should open in front of you. Make sure no wires are connecting the top cover to the bottom case anymore, the cover should only be left with 6 screws, 3 on each side. If you are sure that no parts or wires will interfere with the separation of the screen, proceed to the next step.

Step four: remove the screen, get access to the loops. Now we need to open the lid a little more than 90 degrees (when closed, you will not remove the screen) and put the laptop on its side so that the screen is ajar on the left. Next, unscrew the screws that secure the hinges, while be sure to hold the screen. Once you have completely unscrewed all six screws, you must first remove the upper left hinge from the case (the left one towards you during the repair), and then lift the screen vertically, up and remove the lower hinge.

Next, we need to remove the plastic casing, for this we shift it to the right by 10mm and remove it. Remember how the wires were laid under the casing, when reassembling, be sure to lay the wires in the same order.

Step Five: We tighten the loose loops or replace them. Now we just need to tighten the loops well, after placing them horizontally relative to the screen. If in your case the screws simply loosened and this caused the hinges to play, consider that the repair is over and you can carefully assemble the Macbook in the reverse order. I recommend that if you have a thread lock, treat the screws with a blue (collapsible) lock, most likely after such a preventive maintenance, the screws will never loosen again. I also lubricated the hinges with silicone grease, which is sold in radio components, the hinges will not stop holding and will work under conditions of minimal negative friction, this is not necessary, but I still recommend it.

If you find that the fastening is broken or the threads are stripped, then most likely you will need to either re-thread the aluminum or replace the entire top cover. In the event of a malfunction of the hinges themselves, you can easily replace them by unscrewing the screws.

This procedure helped me restore the original state of the hinges, now the lid is in position like on a new laptop, there are no backlashes, and now it’s doubly pleasant to use it yourself, because you yourself know how a thing becomes dearer when you give it a new life with your own hands.

Many thanks to Evgeny Belyaev who shared his video, it helped me gain courage and repair my Macbook Pro myself. In this video you can clearly see all the steps for repairing loose hinges. I hope that this article will help you repair your faithful friend and after that he will take on a new life with you, and every time you open the lid, you will feel a slight sense of pride, because you breathed new life into this device with your own hands.

In this article, I want to tell you, dear readers, about a rather interesting, but at the same time, not dispelled myth - broken hinges on Apple laptop covers. There are still rumors on the Internet that supposedly, over time, when opening the laptop screen, it either starts to creak, or loses its former elasticity and starts to dangle in all directions. In especially neglected cases, the lid with the screen does not close at all, and then completely falls off, connecting to the laptop only through wires. In this article, we will try to deal with this problem, understand how real it is and whether we should think about buying a new Mac if such terrible things are happening to it.

To understand the essence of the issue, it is worth watching the video:

As you probably noticed, on one side the screen was slightly warped and a noticeable gap formed. It is quite clear that the source is the same mythical loop, with a light touch of which the laptop lid begins to randomly shake, making a characteristic sound. Surely, with prolonged use, such a faulty mechanism will not take long to wait, and one of the hinges on which the screen is held will simply break. But for now, let's leave this unfortunate buyer with potential breakage and get to the heart of the problem. It is only worth noting that the video shows the very first MacBook Air, introduced in 2008.

The essence of the problem we are investigating lies in the fact that after 1-2 years of use, almost all Apple laptops begin to show difficulties with opening the screen, a characteristic crunch appears, and sometimes the hinges completely wedged.
After visiting Apple's official support page, where users usually talk about their pressing issues, I couldn't find anything related to this topic, basically everyone is trying to paint the problems of the new iPad. Then I decided to turn to professionals in this field who have been repairing Apple laptops for a long time. The answer came right away - their service appreciates the nerves of users already annoyed by the breakdown.

Hinge problems with Apple laptops are extremely rare. Most models of recent years have silumin loops, which have proven themselves well. If necessary, they are adjustable both in strength and in position. Most mechanical problems after a long time of use are usually caused by the ingress of foreign particles into the hinges. For example, household dust, sand, and even the appearance of mineral deposits.

Any problem that occurs even in a statistically insignificant percentage of cases on the Internet is always blown up into a world problem. But there is a case when problems with loops ceased to be casuistry. The first model of the MacBook Air had a "childhood illness" - over the years, the hinges began to collapse.

They also quickly answered me from another, no less reputable, service center called "MacFix":

There are various problems with loops. Most often treated with the first generation MacBook Air. Attachments to the body break at the hinges. On the MacBook Pro (models 470/471), the frame that holds the hinges from the back cover often flies off. This happens due to poor quality glue. On white MacBooks, the oil in the reverse hinge mechanism often dries out, but the creaking is usually due to deformation of the case. In any case, each situation is individual.

On the latest MacBook models, this problem does not exist. As a rule, all defects arise due to mechanical influences. With instructions on hand and hands from the right place, you can get to the hinge sleeve, remove the display module and lubricate the hinges with oil yourself.

From all this, it turns out that the problem was most common in the first models of the MacBook Air (which is in the video above), the problem rarely affects other models of Apple laptops (and if it does, it is not caused by wear, but big amount dust), and if it occurs, it can be eliminated, but you should not do it yourself:

I do not recommend doing it yourself to avoid damage to sensitive elements by static. Well, because the correction after an unqualified repair is the most frequent reason for contacting our service center. — service center «MacFix».

Finally, I advise you to watch another video, which could also contribute to the growth of our myth with you (I hope now completely dispelled?). It compares the hinge capabilities of the two MacBook Pro models and shows that the updated laptop's screen lid (located on the right) has been significantly improved (including the hinge mechanism), opens very smoothly, but is unable to stay flat under its aluminum chassis.

I really hope that you enjoyed my little investigation into the truth of the myth, and I will be glad knowing that MacBook users can now be calm about their favorite computers, just like the author himself.

I would like to express my special gratitude to the DeepApple and MacFix service centers for such detailed and prompt answers on this issue.

One of the vulnerable elements of Macbook laptops are the hinges (hinges) connecting the case and the screen. During operation of the laptop, the hinges may break, make a creaking sound, or become very loose. Repair of case hinges should not be postponed for a long time, as their breakage creates inconvenience during everyday use of the laptop. Screen hinge failure - not warranty case, and therefore you will have to fix this malfunction yourself or use the services of a Macrepublic service center.

Our advantages

How to fix matrix loops?

Despite the apparent simplicity of installing new matrix hinges, this is a complex procedure that requires a professional approach to complete. Replacing the matrix hinges requires removing the thin and fragile display frame. At the slightest inaccuracy, the frame can bend and visible defects will remain on it. Macrepublic service center staff perform repairs taking into account the characteristics of each laptop model. For some models, repairs are carried out as follows:

  • 1. First, using a thin blade, the adhesive layer is cut off and the screen frame is separated along the entire perimeter. In this case, it is important not to damage the loops placed under the frame.
  • 2. If the hinges are only loosened, you need to securely tighten them, after placing them horizontally relative to the display.
  • 3. In case of a more severe breakdown (thread breakage or mechanical damage), new hinges are attached. They are fixed on bolts screwed into the topcase and body.
  • 4. As a final step, using a special adhesive, the display frame is glued to its original place.

Professional problem solving

Only the correct execution of each step will eliminate the breakdown and operate the laptop without any problems. Therefore, it is advisable to entrust this procedure to the employees of the Macrepublic service center. Repair of matrix loops is carried out by professionals quickly and efficiently.
