Today, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2013, the Gazprom Group represented by Gazprom Marketing and Trading (GM&T) signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with OAO United shipbuilding corporation» (USC) on the construction of LNG tankers, as well as the Agreement on strategic partnership in the classification and certification of LNG tankers with the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and the Memorandum of Understanding with OAO Sovcomflot.

As part of the same ceremony, JSC Far East Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center, on behalf of USC, signed Technology Transfer Agreements with several leading South Korean shipyards, world leaders in shipbuilding, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding with GTT, the largest manufacturer of cargo systems for LNG carriers.

All these documents are part of a strategic initiative aimed at increasing Russian participation in all segments of the Gazprom Group's LNG transportation, including the development of seaborne LNG transportation technologies, shipbuilding, ship repair, commercial operations and marine personnel. One of the main components of its implementation is the construction and development of the Zvezda shipbuilding complex in the city of Bolshoy Kamen, Primorsky Krai.

The signed documents are aimed at developing cooperation in terms of organizing the participation of IC Zvezda in the program for the construction of up to 13 newest ice-class gas tankers with delivery from 2017 to 2021 for the future needs of the Gazprom Group. Zvezda is expected to take part in the construction of each vessel under this program, and at the initial stage will produce basic blocks, mega blocks and LNG cargo systems in partnership with one of the South Korean shipyards. After the construction of the Zvezda infrastructure is completed, from 2020 the construction of LNG carriers will be fully transferred to this shipyard.

Commenting on the signing of this important package of documents, Nikolai Grigoriev, Director of the Department of International Shipping and Logistics at Gazprom Marketing and Trading, said: “We are proud to have witnessed this very important event, which was made possible thanks to joint work GM&T and our partners for the benefit strategic goal increasing Russian participation in the construction of LNG carriers for the Gazprom Group. Today's signing confirmed that the course we took in 2010 to involve key Russian partners in the design and construction of the most modern gas carriers, train highly qualified gas carriers for command and rating crews, and expand our global LNG trading business, which now covers all markets and supply routes, including the Northern Sea Route. We will continue moving towards our dream of having Russian LNG delivered to Gazprom's customers on ships built in Russia and driven by Russian crews.”

Gazprom Marketing and Trading took into operation a new LNG carrier Reka Lena

During a ceremony held on Friday 4 October 2013 at the HHI shipyard in Ulsan ( South Korea), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) put into operation a new gas carrier (serial number 2557), called the Lena River.

The Reka Lena tanker was chartered by the Gazprom Marketing and Trading Group (“GM&T”) from the Greek LNG carrier Dainagaz and will be used by GM&T for several years. This is the third vessel chartered by the GM&T group from Dainagaz, after the Ob River tanker, which last year became the first LNG carrier in the world to pass through the Northern Sea Route, and the Yenisei River tanker, which entered service in July.

An ever-expanding fleet of LNG carriers will be used by GM&T to support its growing global LNG trading portfolio.

The Lena River is a high-tech vessel with membrane-type cargo tanks with a cargo capacity of 155,000 cubic meters. m, equipped with a three-fuel diesel-electric power plant. The ice class of the tanker is 1A and equipment for use in winter conditions allows the gas carrier to operate in ice conditions, including within the Northern Sea Route during open navigation.

Like the tankers "Reka Ob" and "River Yenisei", the vessel will be operated by an international crew, including graduates of the State University of the Sea and River Fleet. Admiral S. O. Makarov (St. Petersburg, Russia).

The Lena River tanker is traditionally named after one of the three great Siberian rivers flowing into the Arctic Ocean, along with the Ob River and Yenisei River tankers.
