How to grow a crystal from sugar at home

It is best to start your experiments on growing crystals at home with the most interesting and enjoyable ones. The easiest way to grow a crystal is from sugar, and if you do this experiment with children, they will be able to taste the fruits of their creativity at the end of the process.

In order to grow a crystal from sugar, we will need:

  • 2 glasses of water;
  • 5 glasses of granulated sugar;
  • wooden skewers;
  • paper;
  • small saucepan;
  • several clear glasses.

The process of making a crystal begins with the manufacture of sugar syrup. To do this, take 1/4 cup of water and two tablespoons of sugar. Mix, bring on fire until syrup is obtained. We cut paper circles a little larger than the diameter of our glasses and pierce the resulting circles with chopsticks. The main thing is that the paper is firmly fixed on the skewer. Pour the cooled, but still hot syrup into glasses. At this stage, a little food coloring can be added to the syrup, then the crystal will eventually turn out to be colored. Growing a crystal from salt at home is a fairly simple process, but it requires patience and care. However, the result of the experiment exceeds all expectations. We will need:

  • pure water;
  • pot;
  • 2 glass jars;
  • salt;
  • strong thread.

We heat water in a saucepan, we heat it very much, and do not bring it to a boil, the experiment will not work in boiling water. After heating the water, we gradually begin to pour salt into it, stirring constantly until the portion of salt is completely dissolved. Then add more salt, stir until dissolved. And so on until the salt ceases to dissolve. Pour the resulting saturated saline solution into a jar and let it stand well for a day. The next day we will see a lot of small crystals of settled salt in the jar. We choose the most beautiful and largest of them, carefully take it out and tie it to a thread. Carefully pour the solution into an empty jar, making sure that the settled crystals do not fall into a new vessel. Then we lower the crystal on a thread into a filtered saline solution and stock up on patience. After 2-3 days you will notice an increase in the crystal, this growth will continue for some time until the end of growth. After you notice that the crystal has stopped growing, you can either end the experiment if you are satisfied with the result, or prepare another saturated saline solution, as we did above, and lower our crystal there. By the way, if you often change the salt solution, then the growth of the crystal will be faster.

It is very important not to cool the solution on purpose and not to shake it, in this case crystals of an imperfect shape are obtained. Also, do not add any dyes, the crystal will not be colored, and the experiment will be ruined.

How to grow a crystal from copper sulfate at home

Growing crystals from copper sulphate at home is already the next level of complexity, which requires compliance with safety requirements and can only be performed by children under adult supervision.

For the experiment we need:

  • water, preferably distilled;
  • glass jar;
  • copper salt (copper sulfate or copper sulfate, which can be bought at a gardening store).

Before buying, be sure to consider the substance, it should be a bright blue homogeneous powder. In the presence of lumps and green blotches, it is better to refuse the purchase. It will go to summer residents on the farm, but we, novice chemists, will not.

So, the correct vitriol is purchased. Pour about 100 grams of powder into a glass jar and pour a little hot water, stirring constantly. We must get a saturated solution in which the copper salt can no longer dissolve. Filter the solution and put it in the refrigerator. The next day at the bottom we will find many crystals. We select a couple of the largest and most beautiful and place them in a container with a filtered solution. Before that, we act with crystals in the same way as in the previous experiment with table salt, namely, we fix it on a thread and lower it into a jar. I embarked on this experiment to see if I could influence the shape so that they grow in a certain way or a certain size, which is based on the lattice structure on which they are grown.

Step 1: Required Components

To grow your salt crystals you need:

  • Salt. Can be grown with almost any salt, however best results are achieved with copper sulfate or magnesium sulfate. You can also experiment with kitchen salt, sea salt, pink salt, and more. If you are using copper sulfate, wear nitrile gloves! In my experiments, I use magnesium sulfate.
  • Distilled water
  • A clean container, at least 5cm wider than the crystal you want to grow. Transparent containers have an advantage here over colored ones, as you can see through them what is growing inside, and if you also use kitchen utensils, you will be sure that your container is not afraid of heat and will not burst.
  • The object on which the crystal will grow, or the string, experiment with lattice structures, as I did!
  • Something to hang your object in solution on: a stick, chopstick, wire, string, etc.
  • A pot large enough to boil the right amount of water and salt for the project.
  • Spoon for mixing.

Step 2: Create the Salt Solution

Measure the volume of water:

  • Put an object in a container
  • Fill the object container with water to find out how much water you need
  • Pour the water into the measuring container to determine the resulting volume
  • Measure the amount of salt: 3 parts water to 1 part salt (there will be a little less than 30% salt in the solution)
  • Boil water.
  • After boiling, reduce the heat of the stove to low.
  • Pour the salt into the water and stir until it is completely dissolved. Turn off the stove.
  • Carefully pour the solution into the container with the object placed in it.
  • Place the container with the solution in the place where you will leave it for the duration of the growth.

Step 3: Place the Object or String in the Salt Solution






To simply grow a salt crystal:

  • Place a chopstick or spoon in the top middle of the container
  • Wind the string around the center of the stick/spoon so that it hangs down and is immersed in the solution about 4 cm or more from the bottom of the container.
  • Leave the container where it won't be touched and watch the crystal grow

To grow a salt crystal on an object:

Do almost the same as in the previous list. Hang the object on a string so that it hangs at least 5 cm from the bottom of the container. You can hang an object with sticks or wires.

Since I used lattice structures, I suspended them both with wire and with chopsticks.

Step 4: Wait for the crystals to grow



Do not disturb the container, but watch your crystals grow.

I advise you to leave the container for at least 1 day, but for best results allow 3 days for growth. At some point, most of the salt will be in the crystal and it will simply stop growing.

Step 5: Gently Pull Your Crystals Out of the Solution

When you determine that it has grown to the desired size and shape, gently pull it by the string, or pull it out of the solution. If they are connected to your object through the entire container, then use a knife to carefully detach them from the walls of the container, being careful not to damage the structure of your creation.

Step 6: Do you want bigger crystals?



Before removing a string or object from the devices you used to hang it, consider whether you want to grow an even larger crystal. If so, repeat the process and your crystals will get bigger. Each time you only need to make a new saline solution.

If you will be repeating the process to grow larger crystals, it is very important to allow the water to cool to room temperature after boiling the water and creating the brine before lowering the structure into the solution.

If you do not cool the water, then it will dissolve the already prepared ones and you will, as it were, start over.

I achieved a relatively smooth transition from object to crystal, each time dropping the object deeper into the solution.

Crystallization can be initiated by dust particles on the surface of the solution, but this situation is uncontrollable. To obtain controlled growth, the "seed crystal" is tied to a piece of thread and dipped into the solution. As the temperature of the solution continues to drop, more crystals accumulate on the thread. The speed at which crystallization occurs will affect the quality. To grow a sufficiently large crystal from an aqueous solution of copper sulfate, you will need:

  • a glass or plastic container of any size, but preferably transparent and colorless, so that you can easily spy on the growth of crystals in it. The plastic version is convenient in that crystals do not adhere to it. If the jar is larger, then this will allow you to grow a much larger crystal. But it is also important to take into account the fact that the larger the jar, the more solution will have to be prepared and the larger portion of the reagent will be required;
  • copper sulfate or copper sulfate, which can be bought not only in a chemical store, but also in a gardening store. Although it will not be clean enough, it is not so important. Before you buy salt, you need to consider the substance. To do this, the package contains a small strip of transparent polyethylene, through which a bright blue powder should be visible. In the presence of large lumps, especially green ones, it is better to refuse to buy, because such vitriol was probably stored at high humidity and is oversaturated with a huge amount of impurities. You will have to suffer with it when growing crystals, and therefore it is better to contact another similar store.

Growing crystals from copper sulfate is perhaps the most popular. They are beautiful in shape and grow quite quickly.

Copper sulfate is used in horticulture and agriculture as a fungus and mold control agent. Copper sulphate is quite toxic, so in experiments it is recommended to use disposable or non-food utensils and wash your hands thoroughly.

For the experiment, we need 100 gr. copper sulfate per 100 ml of water. Stock up on 300 ml of water and 300 gr. vitriol, respectively.

Put the jar in a water bath and pour hot water into it, dissolve 100 g in water. vitriol.

Transfer after 10 min. vitriol from the first jar to the second. After a while, check the bottom of the jar, seed crystals should form there.

Try to choose crystals of the correct form 1-2 mm long. Dry them on a paper towel, try not to touch them with your hands, use tweezers.

Prepare 200-300 ml of the solution and, after tying the seed crystal with a thread, place it in the solution.

Prepared thus, there is nothing left, how to grow a crystal from vitriol. So, a container is taken and copper sulfate is poured into it. You don’t need to pour a lot, 100 grams will do for a start. Salt is poured with hot water (better, of course, distilled, but not necessary). Then you can use two ways. First, a seed is taken, that is, a small crystal. The more there are, the more crystals will come out. A little water pours, and the solution is constantly stirred. It should become so saturated that the grains of salt at the bottom cannot dissolve. The solution is filtered while still hot and placed in a cold place, but not covered with a lid. On the second day, the bottom of the container is covered with a bunch of small crystals. It is necessary to select from them a couple of pieces of the most even and largest. You can also choose according to your taste - those that you liked the most. A solution for crystals can be prepared in the same way, but add a little more water, cool, and then filter thoroughly.

Copper sulphate is a poisonous compound, but you can buy it at any garden store.

There are two ways to obtain crystals from vitriol: cooling and evaporation, but most experimenters still prefer evaporation.

It takes 4-6 hours to grow a copper crystal.

It should be noted that after a few hours the crystal will lose its luster as the water evaporates from it. To prevent this, varnish the crystal. So it will not only remain shiny for a long time, but also become non-toxic and you can safely pick it up.

The second end of the fishing line is tied to a pencil or other similar long object, and then the crystal is placed in the solution. the length of the fishing line must be adjusted so that the seed hangs on it in the middle of the solution itself. So the crystal should grow evenly in all directions. The container is placed in a place with a constant temperature and covered with a sheet of paper. And not cardboard, under which even small crystals will grow for several months, but under thin paper only a few weeks. Once a week, the solution should be filtered from the precipitated crystals. This will grow beautiful bluish-blue crystals with parallelogram-shaped edges. When their size is right for you, they need to be pulled out, rinsed in running cold water, wiped with a napkin and opened with several layers of colorless varnish, and nail polish will do. Such a crystal is freely taken in hand, wetted with water, which will not harm it in any way, because the varnish will completely protect the fragile substance. Fast way

You will need a bank of 0.5 liters, you need to add 200 grams of copper sulfate to it, the mixture is poured with a glass of water. The jar should stand on a sand stove, when heated, the mixture should be constantly stirred, the grains of the powder should be completely dissolved;

After the mixture has become homogeneous, the dishes are removed from the bath and placed on a cold surface. The mixture should come to room temperature. The copper sulfate crystal will serve as a seed for the solution, it should be even and large;

Nothing should touch the walls of the glass. If everything does not dissolve in the liquid, then it's okay. When cooled, the solution gives off salt, in turn, it remains on the thread. To get a large crystal, it will take more time and the choice of seed must be approached responsibly, the larger and smoother the formation, the more beautiful the product will turn out.

It will take 200 ml of water and 100 grams of vitriol.

Vitriol is mixed with water in a jar or glass and left for a day. The substance must be stirred so that it dissolves. Next, the solution is filtered, and what remains at the bottom can be used again to prepare the solution;

For seeding, you need to tie a “pebble” to a thread, the other end is best fixed on a stick and placed horizontally on a glass. Then you need to lower it vertically, the dishes should be covered with a cloth to prevent dust from entering;

After a few days, the product will grow, increase every day;

It may be difficult to make a crystal, but to avoid this, you should:

  1. If you want to get a single pebble, then the solution should be poured into a clean container and a large crystal should be placed there;
  2. Crystals can also form on the thread, and to prevent this from happening, you need to raise the main one higher so that the thread does not come into contact with water;
  3. Instead of a woolen thread, you can use nylon or thin wire, but if you change the base, the formation will grow longer;
  4.
