Cafe names in Italy. Italian cafe

If you find yourself in an Italian restaurant in Italy, where there is no menu in Russian or English, and you do not have an Italian translator with you, then the description of Italian dishes below may be useful to you. Italian cuisine is very rich, so I only list the most typical dishes that I have personally tried and are worth trying.

It is difficult to systematize Italian cuisine, because... Italians are individualists and dreamers; they specifically try to make things different from their neighbors. But I will try.

ITALIAN MENU

Coperto (obligatory tip)

The amount depends on the level of the establishment. On average 1.5 euros per person. Even if this word is not on the menu, it will definitely be on the bill. Translated from Italian as “covered”. This is not food, but an analogue of a tip, but only fixed. Includes bread and wonderful crispy sticks" grissini", which are already on the table and you can and should crunch on them while waiting for the ordered dishes. You must pay, but there are no additional tips, look.

Menu del giorno, Menu fusso, Menu turistico - Set lunch

Menu del giorno (literal translation: menu of the day) is a set lunch for ordinary Italians. Also called Menu fisso (literal translation: fixed menu). This usually includes two courses (for example, a first and a second, or an appetizer and a second), a bottle of water and coffee, sometimes 1/4 liter of wine is included. The price, depending on the configuration, varies from 10 to 15 euros.
Menu tourism (Russian translation: tourist menu)- this is the same set lunch as Menu del Giorno, but in tourist places where there are many tourists it is called Turistico, so that it is clearer to people who cannot translate from Italian. In this case Coperto not paid.

Al buffet - Buffet

[Ál Buffé] - translated as "Buffet".

For example: Colazione al buffet= Breakfast Buffet. If breakfast is at the hotel, the number of approaches is unlimited, you can apply it with a slide. Italians are already accustomed to Russians.

Or, another example, the menu of an Italian restaurant says " Antipasto al buffet". This means "Buffet Appetizer". That is, they give you a plate, or you take it yourself, and put it to your liking from the dishes laid out. The number of approaches is 1 (one, in Italian Uno)! It is impossible to apply it with a slide! (otherwise you may hear Italian curse words.)

In reviews of the Don Giulio pasticheria, which recently opened in Moscow, the authors never tire of praising the local deep-dish risotto, minestrone, meat snacks and other Italian delicacies. There is only one “but”: in a traditional Italian pasticheria, risotto, meat and soups should not be served.

Let's look at the classification of Italian establishments, find out how an agriturismo differs from a regular restaurant, what Tavola Calda is, and also what should actually be served in a pasticheria.

TRATTORIA

Trattoria, in the Italian understanding, is a home-cooked restaurant, that is, it serves what mother and grandmother cook, which means the menu should have a complete list of Italian dishes with the obligatory antipasti, soups, first courses: pasta and risotto, as well as hot - meat and fish.

OSTERIA

There are two types of osteria. The first is a liquor store with bar functions. Of course, this establishment is not so much about food as it is about drinking; it is in osterias that you can taste the best wines not only of the province of Italy in which you find yourself, but also of other regions of the country.

But in terms of food, you can’t really go wild in such an osteria; here, as a rule, there are local types of prosciutto and cheeses, sandwiches, in a word, cold appetizers. The second type is osteria-restaurants, open in the evening; these are essentially ordinary restaurants, but with an emphasis on a rich selection of wines; open mainly in the evening.

AGRITURISMO

A subsistence restaurant, sometimes with a hotel where you can stay overnight. The peculiarity is that the food in such a restaurant is prepared from products produced on the owners’ farm, so in the vicinity of the agriturismo you can often see local cows, goats, chickens and other animals.

They are usually located not in cities (you can’t open a farm there, you know), but in the suburbs. They are often open to the public only on weekends; on weekdays, the owners are busy working on the farm. Favorite places for Italians to meet for Sunday lunch with family.

GASTRONOMY

A store where you can buy not only cheeses or prosciutto from local producers, but also ready-made dishes, such as baccala, salads, marinades, and so on.

As a rule, it is equipped with a full kitchen, where food is prepared, and the establishment often has tables where you can have a snack from the gastronomy range and drink a glass of wine.

PASTICCERIA

The most correct description of establishments of this type is a café-pastry shop; this is where Italians come to have breakfast with brioche (croissant) and a cup of aromatic coffee. In addition, pasticcerias sell sweets, pastries, cakes and often ice cream, and in the afternoon Italians often come here for an aperitif.

Another feature of pasticherias is that all the pastries and sweets here are homemade, that is, prepared. And, importantly, most pasticherias in Italy have a day off on Mondays.

TAVOLA CALDA

An eatery that can be described as a bar with hot snacks. It’s worth going here if you’ve forgotten about the opening hours of Italian restaurants, everything in the area is closed, but you still really want to eat. In addition to sandwiches and salads, there is usually simple pasta from a nearby store and lasagna; wine is also served, but often the simplest kind.

TAVOLA FREDDA

The establishment, whose menu includes sandwiches, salads, sandwiches, inexpensive beer and simple wine, exists for those who want to kill a worm on the run.

GELATERIA

Ice cream parlor selling famous Italian gelato. It's easy to spot a good gelateria - there's always a line of locals at the entrance.

It is usually not customary to eat in an establishment - you take ice cream to go and eat it while sitting on the steps of the nearest church/palazzo, or right while walking.

ROSTICCERIA

The features of these establishments are fast food, very low prices and very high speed of service. Most often, rosticerias are organized on the same principle as classic catering: ready-made dishes are laid out behind the counter, guests put food on a tray and pay for everything at the checkout. As a rule, the menu of rosticherias always includes chicken dishes.

MENSA

A canteen for students or employees of a company. What is typical is that the food there is usually quite decent, sometimes much better than in Tavola Calda, and, of course, very inexpensive.

PANIFICIO

The shop, which sells freshly baked bread, is recommended to come here for fresh baked goods for breakfast on Mondays, when the pasticherias are closed.

MASO (MASO)

A restaurant opened at a farm where livestock is raised for meat and speck is produced. Speck, lard and prosciutto are served throughout the day, hot dishes are served in the evening and lunch hours (from 12.00 to 14.30 and after 18.30). Open mainly in places remote from the city, it is recommended for visiting by amateur meat eaters.

PROSCHUTTERIA

The name speaks for itself; the menu offers all kinds of prosciutto: from classic to boar prosciutto and salami, as well as sandwiches with all of the above and inexpensive wine.

MALGA

Restaurants opened at small cheese production farms. As a rule, all local cheeses are soft and made from cow's milk; in addition to cheeses, hot dishes of the region are served here during lunch and evening hours.

Malga is discovered mainly in mountainous regions; we advise raw foodists to look here.

ANGURIARA

A summer cafe where they sell fresh fruit (from the word anguria - watermelon). In addition to watermelon cut into aesthetic pieces, the menu includes all seasonal fruits and even exotics from somewhere in Thailand: rambutan, lychee or mangosteen.

BIRRERIA

The Italian equivalent of an English pub, yes, today in Italy beer is no less popular than wine, and local producers are no less sophisticated with it than the Czechs or Belgians. The food on the menu, as a rule, includes meat snacks and cheeses, as well as the obligatory sausages; sometimes, however, birreria also serves grilled meat.

BACARI

Establishments of this type can be found exclusively in Venice, the name comes from the word “to chat”, as a result, these are bars with wine and small snacks (sandwiches, salads and cold dishes).

Eating and drinking are supposed to be done while standing; as a rule, there are no seats in the bacari, but these are almost the only places in Venice where you can have a meal on a budget. Sometimes a restaurant is opened during bakari; it is usually located in the next room.

OCTUM (OSMIZZA)

Establishments of this type can only be found in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. They are not open all the time, and in general the word “octice” is translated as “eight”. Essentially, octice is like this: Producers from local farms rent a space where they serve eggs from their farm, prosciutto, cheeses, local baked goods and wine.

Open throughout the day, guests consume food in a civilized way, that is, sitting at tables, but forks are often not provided, so they must eat with their hands. You can find out that an octopus has opened somewhere either, or the old-fashioned way, by carefully examining the pillars or lanterns in the area. If the road is open, a broom with a sign indicating which direction to go or go is hung on a lantern or pole.

By the way, this is how people were notified about the octopuses in the old days, but even now, even though everyone uses the Internet, following the green brooms along the signs is also a popular pastime.
