In 2015, according to Vedomosti, they grew by only 3% taking into account inflation (excluding - by 16%). This is 2.5 times less than in 2014 (8% taking into account inflation). In the average online store, the receipt “grew” by 8% and amounted to 4,050 rubles, the number of orders also increased by 8% (increase to 160 million)

According to Data Insight statistics, buyer interest has shifted from electronics and household appliances to budget products: inexpensive clothing and consumer goods. At the same time, the share of premium brands and expensive goods has decreased. The leaders are sporting goods, products for animals and children's assortment.

At the same time, the quality must be acceptable, since competition in the low and medium segments has been and remains high. Let's look at what products are profitable to trade today, using the example of successful startups and the most popular franchises (according to Forbes 2016).

Food products: pilaf via the Internet

Food products are classified as essential. Even in times of austerity, buyers will never exclude them from their shopping basket. This means you can take your place in this niche. This is exactly what the young entrepreneur Ilkhom Ismailov did. In 2014, he opened an online Uzbek food store, Plov.com.

Start-up capital - 1 million rubles from their own savings - was spent on furnishing the kitchen and creating a website for accepting orders.

At first, the entrepreneur and his partners sold only pilaf, but in 2015 they expanded the range and began offering sweets, salads, manti, and baked goods: sales increased by 88%. One thing is clear: there is demand. People are looking. There is competition (that's good). Compared to smartphones, it’s not as tough (this is also good). Chose. Launched. Seriously worked on the website, SEO promotion, advertising. There is a result.

#4. Unique products for the Online Store - forget it!

What is this? Products that have no analogues in the mass market segment.

For example:

  • Refrigerator with artificial intelligence

How I tried to sell a unique product

Then they appeared in all stores. People began to replace burnt-out incandescent lamps with LED ones.

I replaced it too.

But their light was, frankly speaking, vile. Some people are happy with this, but I (a lighting specialist) am absolutely not.

I decided to find an LED lamp with high technical parameters. Found. Unique product. Domestic development. Lots of awards at technical exhibitions.

Bought. Installed it in a chandelier. Beauty! Comfort!

The spectrum of light is almost like that of the sun. The wife is happy. Friends come in and are surprised:

- We want it too. Where can I buy?

The uniqueness of the lamp was high color rendering index. Most people have never heard of this parameter (even though it is the most important parameter for household lighting).

There were no analogues. Competitors weren't selling. There weren't any in stores. There was no advertising. And people were not ready to overpay for something UNCLEAR. Here is a unique product for you.

I have turned off advertising (but I am renewing the domain for now)

A little money still drips from the online store. There are buyers who need lamps with high color rendering.

For example, companies that deal with printing. They need lighting with high color rendering to see printed images in natural color.

But this is not at all what I expected. It was not possible to rake in money with a shovel...

However, the site is in the top for the query “ high color rendering lamp" I DO NOT pay money for visitors. I don’t pay for the site (it’s assembled from ready-made modules). There are no costs. There are few orders. Money is dripping. Therefore, I am not closing the project yet.

In fact: But since then, I haven’t dealt with unique goods.

#5. Beware of Chinese consumer goods (goods in bulk for one-pagers)


What is this? Buy a product for 200 - sell for 1,700 rubles.

You've probably seen this business model promoted many times. My main rule in life: do not criticize what I DO NOT like. I don’t like it, someone else likes it. To each his own.

I have a negative attitude towards this kind of business. It is very close to the border called "Deception". But I won't criticize. I'll just share my experience. And you can draw your own conclusions.

Suppliers of goods for one-page websites

There are many suppliers of cheap Chinese goods. Not only in China, but also in Russia. Wholesale prices are really low. The assortment is large. In the photographs (from the websites) the products look delicious. My mouth is watering - I can’t wait to get rich.

What's the catch? There will be a lot of returns. There will be dissatisfied customers. You will have to return the item. Most likely at your own expense. You may have to read negative comments about yourself on review sites.

Problem: Product quality is unpredictable

Note that I don't say "low quality". This is the “economy” segment. The products are either no-name or very cheap fake brands.

We are not talking about high quality in principle. And it seems like everyone knows about it. In fact, there is nothing criminal about the low quality of a product (if it is not disguised).

I'll say it again. The quality is UNPREDICTABLE!

What does it mean? You pick up two boxes of goods. Let these be power banks (for example). The products are the same. From one batch. You get it. Checking. It feels good.

Send to two buyers. The first one - no complaints. The second one threw a tantrum over the phone. The power bank is not working. It indicates a capacity of 20,000 mAh. But in fact, it charges the smartphone by a maximum of 15%. The buyer is unhappy. Requires a refund.

The product is of inadequate quality - you are required to return the money or exchange it

What is this? A product that does NOT meet the stated specifications. Within 14 days the buyer has the right to return it. According to the consumer rights law. You will have to exchange the product (at your own expense) or return the money.

Delivery to the supplier at YOUR expense. Return shipping is at YOUR expense.

So, you spend a ton of money on returns and exchanges. You spend a lot of nerves communicating with an offended customer (and he will not be the only one). And in the end, you get exactly the same UNPREDICTABLE product. There is no certainty that THIS power bank is working.

And this is provided that the supplier is decent. After all, he can send. What do you want? You will not have any contracts, invoices, or invoices. As a rule, such wholesale suppliers accept payment to an individual’s card.

In fact: I went to the “China wholesale” format website. I couldn’t resist and ordered goods for 10,000 rubles. For testing. This business seemed very profitable. I read the reviews on the site - everyone is happy.

I think I'll make a small Chinese store. I will not deceive buyers. I will not inflate the characteristics. I will organize delivery to the regions with cash on delivery. I'll make a small guarantee. I will describe the return rules in detail.

#6. Choose expensive products. They sell better online

But here's what's interesting. No retail store carries luxury components. Not one! There may be an urgent order, but the supplier does not have the components. There is nowhere to intercept. There is NO ONE in the whole city. Not at any price.

For cheap consumer goods, people go to a regular store. For expensive goods, people go to the Internet. Therefore, expensive goods are sold better in an online store.

But this is a special case. Maybe it's just in my niche? It is wrong to draw a conclusion from one case. And now, in fact, I come to the research.

Study

After the successful launch of the website Zetsvetilnik.ru, I decided to expand the range. The original idea was this. I'll try and feel the demand for table lamps. If things go well, I will add 5-10 more table lamps to the site.

Things got going. I started looking for suppliers. Found. I contacted the manager of one very large supplier. Woman. Aged. It feels like years of experience. Adequate and sociable.

I told her that I have a small business. I plan to expand. Interested in modern table lamps. And he asked for a little help: a list of goods that online stores and retail stores order from them.

She made an unload from 1C. I removed the names of the companies (since the information is confidential) and sent a report on positions and numbers.

I talked about this topic with a female manager. She says that this is indeed true. Online stores sell expensive goods better.

What's the catch? The average size of the boxes is 40x30x25 cm. The supplier is far away, then you need a reserve - at least 50 boxes. The total volume is 1.5 cubic meters. Difficulties immediately arise:

  • high delivery cost (approximately 5,000 rubles)
  • protective packaging (otherwise they won’t arrive whole)
  • delivery within the city (you cannot bring it with your own transport)
  • storage warehouse (not to store them at home)
  • logistics from warehouse to courier service

You have to pay for all this. When I did the math, I realized it was not profitable. Lots of fuss - little money. Either the packaging volume must be less or the margin must be greater.

Always consider the economy. Check with your supplier for package size. Calculate the cost of delivery on the websites of transport companies.

In fact. I abandoned this idea. My business model is Mini Online Stores. I don’t want to bother with warehouses, employees, accounting, and logistics. Therefore, I choose suppliers that are closer and products that are smaller in size.
